Why Walking Gets Harder With Age

Walking may look simple, but every step requires the brain, nerves, muscles, and joints to work together.

New Australian research suggests that this carefully controlled system changes with age as the body begins to place more importance on staying steady than on moving quickly and efficiently.

The study was led by researchers from Flinders University and the University of Canberra. The team examined movement in 107 healthy adults ranging from 26 to 86 years old to understand how normal aging changes the way people walk.

The researchers found that older adults appear to adopt what they describe as a “safety-first” walking strategy. The body becomes more focused on keeping each step stable, even when doing so requires extra muscular effort.

The ankle is particularly important during walking. It helps support the body when the foot reaches the ground and then provides much of the push that moves the body forward into the next step.

Lead author Dr. Cody Lindsay, from Flinders University’s Caring Futures Institute, said aging changes how the ankle and surrounding muscles perform these jobs. The changes may be small individually, but together they can affect walking speed, energy use, and balance.

One important difference involved muscles that normally perform opposite actions around the ankle. Older adults were more likely to activate these muscles at the same time, a process researchers call co-contraction.

This simultaneous muscle activity makes the ankle stiffer. A stiffer joint can provide extra control and may help the body feel more secure when the foot touches the ground.

But there is a trade-off. When opposing muscles contract together, they use energy while partly working against each other, meaning the body can spend more effort without producing the same amount of forward movement.

This may help explain a familiar experience for many older people. Walking can gradually feel more tiring even when the person is covering the same distance and does not have an obvious illness or injury.

The study also found that older adults produced less power when pushing off the ground. Their steps tended to become shorter, and they walked more slowly than younger participants.

Associate Professor Maarten Immink said these changes suggest that the nervous system adjusts its priorities with age. Instead of maximizing speed and efficiency, it increasingly tries to reduce instability and keep the person upright.

That strategy can be useful because falling becomes a greater concern later in life. Falls can cause fractures, head injuries, loss of confidence, and reduced independence, making fall prevention an important part of healthy aging.

Yet becoming stiffer is not a perfect solution. The extra muscle activity can increase fatigue, while reduced ankle power may make it harder to walk long distances or respond rapidly when something unexpected happens.

That last point is especially important when someone trips, slips, or walks over uneven ground. Recovering balance often requires the body to produce a fast and powerful response, and a slower, stiffer walking pattern may reduce that ability.

The findings may therefore help explain why some older adults feel both more cautious and less secure while walking. A person may naturally slow down to stay safe but still have difficulty reacting quickly enough when balance is suddenly disturbed.

The researchers say exercise could help preserve mobility. Strength remains important, but programs for older adults may benefit from also training balance, coordination, and the ability of muscles to work together efficiently.

Activities such as tai chi can challenge balance in a controlled way. Lower-leg strengthening, regular walking, and exercises that require coordinated movements may also help people maintain confidence and physical function.

Regular physical activity has benefits far beyond walking mechanics. It can support muscle strength, heart health, bone health, mood, and the ability to continue everyday activities independently.

The study has some limitations that are important when interpreting the results. It compared healthy adults of different ages rather than following the same people for decades, so it shows age-related differences but cannot prove exactly how each individual’s walking changes over time.

The participants were also healthy adults, meaning the findings may not fully describe people with arthritis, neurological disease, serious muscle weakness, or other conditions that can strongly affect walking. Those groups may show different movement patterns.

Still, the research offers a useful explanation for a common feature of aging. Slower walking may not simply reflect weaker muscles; it can also represent an active adjustment by the nervous system to make movement feel safer.

The findings support a broader approach to maintaining mobility in later life. Training strength, balance, coordination, and movement control together may be more useful than concentrating on muscle strength alone.

Overall, the study suggests that aging changes the body’s priorities during every step. The body may sacrifice some speed and efficiency to gain stability, but staying physically active could help older adults preserve the balance between safety, mobility, and independence for longer.
