Which Exercises Work Best for Different Parts of Metabolic Syndrome

Millions of people have metabolic syndrome without realising it because the condition often develops silently over many years.

Instead of causing one obvious illness, it combines several risk factors that slowly damage the heart and blood vessels. High blood pressure, raised blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and excess belly fat work together to increase the risk of serious disease.

Exercise has always been one of the main recommendations for preventing and treating metabolic syndrome. Yet not all exercise affects the body in the same way. Researchers wanted to discover whether certain workouts are better suited to specific health problems, and their findings were published in iScience.

To answer this question, the researchers gathered evidence from dozens of carefully controlled studies. After searching thousands of scientific papers, they selected 53 clinical trials involving nearly 3,000 participants. They compared ten forms of exercise, ranging from aerobic training and strength training to yoga, tai chi, qigong, and different types of interval training.

The analysis revealed that each exercise offered unique advantages. Aerobic exercise combined with resistance training was particularly effective for reducing waist circumference, lowering body mass index, improving harmful LDL cholesterol, and helping control blood glucose. This combination may therefore suit people with several metabolic risk factors at once.

For improving blood pressure and raising healthy HDL cholesterol, slower mind-body exercises such as tai chi and qigong performed surprisingly well.

Meanwhile, longer sessions of high-intensity interval training were most effective for reducing body fat, while shorter HIIT sessions produced the strongest improvements in triglycerides, total cholesterol, and lower blood pressure readings.

These findings support the idea that exercise should not always be prescribed in exactly the same way for every patient. Just as doctors choose different medicines for different illnesses, future exercise plans may be designed according to each person’s greatest health need.

The importance of this research is clear because metabolic syndrome has become increasingly common worldwide. Recent estimates suggest more than 1.5 billion adults were affected in 2023, and the numbers continue to rise. The condition is also linked to fatty liver disease, reproductive disorders, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

Unlike medicines that often target only one condition at a time, regular physical activity can improve many aspects of health together. It helps control weight, improves blood sugar, strengthens the heart, lowers blood pressure, and improves cholesterol levels. This makes exercise one of the most cost-effective tools available for preventing chronic disease.

The researchers cautioned that the available evidence is still limited because many studies used different exercise programs, participant groups, and research methods. Larger trials that directly compare different workouts under similar conditions will be needed to confirm the findings.

Overall, the study provides encouraging evidence that choosing the right exercise may help people gain greater benefits than simply exercising without a plan. Although more research is required, the findings move healthcare closer to personalised exercise prescriptions that match each person’s individual health profile.
