In laboratory studies, rilmenidine helped worms, fruit flies, and mice live longer. The animals that received the drug also showed better overall health as they aged. These improvements were similar to the benefits seen in animals that followed a calorie-restricted diet.
The scientists also investigated how the medicine works. They found that rilmenidine acts on a protein called the I1-imidazoline receptor, also known as nischarin-1. This receptor appears to play an important role in the body’s response to the drug and may be involved in the processes that influence aging.
One reason this finding is exciting is that rilmenidine is already an approved medicine. It is taken as a tablet, making it much easier to use than treatments that require injections. It is also generally well tolerated, which could make it more suitable for long-term use if future research confirms its benefits.
This research is especially important because people around the world are living longer than ever before. Even a small delay in the aging process could mean more years of good health and greater independence. Instead of only treating diseases after they appear, scientists hope to find ways to keep people healthier as they grow older.
Although the results are encouraging, the research has so far been carried out mainly in animals. Scientists still need clinical studies to learn whether rilmenidine can safely produce similar benefits in people. They also want to better understand exactly how the drug affects the body’s aging processes.
The findings suggest that medicines developed for one health problem may sometimes have valuable uses for another.
