Could Eating Earlier Help Protect Your Brain?

Many people worry about memory loss as they grow older.

Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia affect millions of families around the world, and the number of cases is expected to rise as populations age.

Although there is still no cure, researchers continue to search for simple lifestyle habits that might help keep the brain healthy for longer. A new pilot study suggests that one of those habits could be limiting the number of hours people eat each day instead of eating from morning until late at night.

The research was led by scientists at Rutgers University and was presented at NUTRITION 2026, the annual scientific meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.

Because the findings come from a small clinical trial presented at a conference, they should be viewed as early evidence until they are confirmed in larger studies and published in a peer-reviewed journal.

The study focused on women because older women and people living with overweight or obesity have a higher risk of developing dementia.

Previous research has shown that healthy eating, regular exercise, good sleep, and weight control may help protect the brain, but few studies have tested whether shortening the daily eating window can make a difference.

The trial included 47 women between 50 and 79 years of age who were overweight or obese. Every participant was advised to reduce daily food intake by about 500 calories to support weight loss. Half of the women also limited their eating to less than nine hours each day, while the others continued eating over about twelve hours.

Most women in the time-restricted group ate between about 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., giving them an average eating window of just over eight hours. The comparison group continued eating across roughly twelve hours each day. Both groups followed the program for six months.

By the end of the study, both groups had lost around 15 pounds, or about 6.8 kilograms, on average.

However, the women who limited their eating hours performed better on tests measuring spatial planning and problem-solving. They also tended to make fewer mistakes on memory and learning tests, although those improvements were smaller and did not reach the same level of statistical confidence.

The researchers believe the timing of eating may influence the body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. Eating earlier in the day and avoiding food close to bedtime may improve the way the body handles energy, reduce inflammation, and support healthy brain function. These ideas still need further testing, but they offer possible explanations for the results.

The team plans to carry out larger studies to see whether the findings hold true in more diverse groups of people. They also want to investigate how eating patterns affect metabolism, inflammation, and the biological pathways linked with ageing and brain health.

Although the results are encouraging, this study has important limitations. It involved only a small number of older women, lasted just six months, and measured short-term changes in thinking rather than whether participants eventually developed dementia. The findings therefore should not be taken as proof that time-restricted eating prevents Alzheimer’s disease.

Overall, the study suggests that when combined with healthy weight loss, limiting food intake to an eight- or nine-hour window each day may offer modest benefits for memory and thinking.

The improvements were not dramatic, but they were consistent enough to justify larger clinical trials. If future research confirms these findings, time-restricted eating could become a simple, low-cost strategy to support healthy brain ageing alongside regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and good sleep.
