
Scientists have created a new experimental antibody that may stop one of the deadliest features of prostate cancer—the ability to spread to other organs.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. Many cases grow slowly and may never cause serious health problems. However, some tumors become aggressive, spread to other parts of the body, and become much harder to treat.
When prostate cancer spreads beyond the prostate, it often reaches the bones or lymph nodes. This process, called metastasis, is responsible for most deaths from the disease. Finding ways to stop cancer from spreading is therefore a major goal of cancer research.
A research team from Umeå University and several collaborating institutions has developed an experimental treatment that may help achieve this goal. Their findings were published in the journal Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy.
The scientists created a fully human antibody, a type of protein designed to recognize and block a specific target involved in cancer growth. Because it is made entirely from human proteins, the antibody may be less likely to trigger unwanted immune reactions than some older treatments.
In preclinical laboratory studies, the antibody slowed the growth of aggressive prostate tumors and prevented them from spreading to other parts of the body. The treatment worked by blocking a newly discovered biological pathway that helps cancer cells grow, invade nearby tissue, and spread.
The researchers believe this new mechanism could also reduce the risk of side effects because it targets cancer in a different way from many existing therapies. However, much more research is needed before this idea can be confirmed.
So far, the treatment has only been tested in preclinical studies. Before it can be used in patients, scientists must carry out additional laboratory work, safety testing, and clinical trials involving people. It must also be approved by health regulators before becoming available.
The project involved experts from several organizations, including the SciLifeLab Drug Discovery and Development Platform, which helped create the antibody. The work was also supported by the Umeå Biotech Incubator and the biotechnology company MetaCurUm Biotech AB.
The researchers are now exploring whether the same treatment strategy could also work against other solid cancers. If successful, the technology could have applications beyond prostate cancer and may eventually benefit many more patients.
The study was led by Professor Maréne Landström at Umeå University. Although the findings are still at an early stage, they represent an encouraging advance in the search for treatments that stop cancer from spreading rather than simply shrinking existing tumors.
The study provides strong early evidence that targeting newly discovered cancer pathways may lead to better treatments with fewer side effects. Nevertheless, laboratory success does not always translate into success in patients, making carefully designed clinical trials essential.
Even so, the research represents an important step toward developing more effective therapies for advanced prostate cancer and possibly other solid tumors.
