
Artificial intelligence has quickly become part of everyday life. Millions of people now ask AI chatbots for help with work, school, writing, cooking, travel plans and even deeply personal questions.
Many people also use chatbots to discuss stress, anxiety, loneliness and relationship problems because they are available at any time, respond instantly and never appear to judge the user.
A recent viewpoint article suggests that while these tools may provide comfort, they could also create unexpected problems for mental health if they replace professional care.
The article was published in the Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science.
Rather than reporting the results of a new clinical trial, the author reviewed existing evidence and discussed how current chatbot design could unintentionally make some mental health problems worse. The paper highlights possible risks that deserve further scientific investigation.
Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Unfortunately, many people face long waiting lists, high costs or limited access to psychologists and psychiatrists. These barriers help explain why AI chatbots have become attractive as an easy and private source of emotional support.
Research suggests that many conversations with AI focus on emotions, relationships and everyday worries rather than work tasks. Some users even prefer talking with a chatbot because it is available 24 hours a day and never becomes impatient. However, general-purpose chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI were not originally designed to provide mental health treatment.
The author argues that one possible problem is delayed professional care. When people receive comforting answers from an AI system, they may feel they already have enough support and postpone seeing a qualified healthcare professional. This delay could allow mental health problems to become more severe before proper treatment begins.
Another concern involves reassurance seeking. People with anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder often repeatedly ask for reassurance to reduce distress. Because chatbots are designed to be polite and helpful, they may continue providing reassurance over and over again instead of encouraging healthier coping strategies. Over time, this cycle could strengthen the behaviour instead of reducing it.
The paper also discusses loneliness and social withdrawal. Someone who feels uncomfortable around other people may find chatbot conversations easier because there is no fear of rejection or embarrassment. While this may provide short-term comfort, relying on AI instead of real human relationships could make isolation worse.
The author also raises concerns about excessive agreement. If a vulnerable person shares unrealistic or distorted beliefs, an overly agreeable chatbot might fail to challenge those ideas strongly enough. Although there is currently limited evidence, the paper argues that this could potentially reinforce unhealthy thinking in some users.
Finally, the article suggests that depending on AI for every decision may reduce confidence in personal judgement. People may gradually begin asking a chatbot to make more and more everyday choices, becoming less confident in solving problems independently. The author believes developers and clinicians should work together to create better safeguards for vulnerable users.
Overall, this viewpoint raises important questions rather than providing final answers. Much of the available evidence remains preliminary and includes observational studies, case reports and individual experiences instead of large clinical trials. The article makes a valuable contribution by identifying possible risks that deserve careful study, but it does not prove that AI chatbots directly worsen mental illness.
