
Scientists have discovered that a very small group of brain cells may have a much bigger influence on emotions than anyone realized.
The finding could help explain why some people develop anxiety, depression, or social withdrawal and may one day lead to more targeted treatments. The research was carried out by scientists at the Institute for Neurosciences in Spain.
The study focused on the amygdala, a small area deep inside the brain that helps control emotions such as fear, stress, and social behavior. The amygdala works together with many other brain regions to help people respond to everyday situations. When this system is out of balance, emotional and mental health problems can develop.
The researchers identified a special group of nerve cells in a part of the amygdala called the basolateral amygdala. They found that when these cells became too active, they disrupted the normal balance of brain signals. This caused behaviors linked to anxiety, depression, and avoiding social contact.
To study the problem, the team used mice that produced too much of a brain receptor called GluK4, which is controlled by the Grik4 gene. This made the brain cells more active than normal and changed the way they communicated with other parts of the brain. The mice became much more anxious and less interested in interacting with other mice.
The scientists then used genetic techniques to restore normal Grik4 activity only in the affected brain cells. This small change helped rebuild normal communication with nearby nerve cells that calm brain activity. After the treatment, the mice became less anxious and showed much more normal social behavior.
The team confirmed the results using detailed tests of brain activity as well as behavioral experiments. They measured how the mice explored open spaces, which can show anxiety levels, and how willing they were to interact with unfamiliar mice. The treated animals showed clear improvements in both areas.
The researchers also tested the same approach in normal mice that naturally showed higher levels of anxiety. These mice also became calmer after treatment. This suggests the discovery may reflect a basic way that the brain controls emotions rather than something unique to one genetic condition.
Not every problem was completely fixed. Some memory abilities, such as recognizing familiar objects, did not fully recover. This suggests that other brain regions, including the hippocampus, are also important in emotional and thinking disorders.
The findings point toward a future where treatments could target specific brain circuits instead of changing brain chemistry throughout the whole body. Such therapies might reduce unwanted side effects while providing more effective relief for anxiety, depression, and social disorders. However, much more research is needed before this approach can be tested in people.
The study was led by Juan Lerma and colleagues and published in the journal iScience. The researchers hope to learn whether the same brain circuits work in humans and whether similar treatments could eventually help people living with long-term anxiety or depression.
