Why the Mediterranean Diet Is So Good for Your Heart and Brain

Doctors have recommended the Mediterranean diet for decades because it is linked to longer life and lower rates of many diseases.

Scientists have now discovered a surprising clue that may explain why this eating pattern is so powerful. The answer may lie in tiny proteins produced inside the energy factories of our cells.

The new research, led by Dr. Roberto Vicinanza at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, was published in Nature Communications.

It focused on two little-known proteins called humanin and SHMOOSE, which are made inside mitochondria.

Mitochondria are often described as the power plants of cells because they produce energy. Scientists now understand they also release signals that influence inflammation, stress, metabolism, and aging throughout the body.

The researchers examined blood samples from older adults and compared them with how closely each person followed a Mediterranean-style diet. Those who ate the healthiest Mediterranean diets had significantly higher levels of humanin and SHMOOSE. Previous studies have connected these proteins with healthier hearts and better brain function.

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes olive oil, fish, beans, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and whole grains while limiting ultra-processed foods and refined carbohydrates. This eating pattern has repeatedly been linked to lower risks of heart disease, dementia, and diabetes, but the biological reasons have remained unclear.

The study also found lower levels of oxidative stress in people who followed the diet most closely. Oxidative stress can damage cells over time and is believed to contribute to aging, Alzheimer’s disease, and cardiovascular disease.

When individual foods were examined, olive oil stood out as one of the strongest contributors. Fish and legumes were also linked to higher humanin levels, while reducing refined carbohydrates appeared to support higher SHMOOSE levels.

The scientists believe these tiny proteins could eventually become biomarkers, meaning simple blood tests might one day show whether a healthy diet is producing beneficial effects inside the body. This could help doctors personalize nutrition advice instead of giving the same recommendations to everyone.

There are still many unanswered questions. The study did not prove that changing a person’s diet will automatically increase these proteins or reduce disease risk. Other lifestyle factors, including exercise and overall health, may have influenced the results.

Future research will test whether dietary changes can directly raise humanin and SHMOOSE levels and whether doing so reduces the risk of heart disease or memory loss. If confirmed, the findings could open a completely new direction for healthy aging research.

Review and analysis: The research is exciting because it connects a well-established healthy diet with newly discovered biological mechanisms inside mitochondria. The findings are scientifically important but remain preliminary because the study was observational and relatively small. Confirmation from larger intervention studies will be essential before firm conclusions can be drawn.
