Why both blood pressure numbers matter to your heart health

When you visit a doctor, one of the most common checks is your blood pressure. The result is shown as two numbers, one on top and one on the bottom.

The results were clear. Both systolic and diastolic pressure are linked to the risk of heart disease and stroke. While the top number still has a stronger effect, the bottom number also plays an important role. Ignoring it could mean missing early warning signs of health problems.

This finding is important because heart disease and stroke are two of the leading causes of death worldwide. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is one of the main risk factors for these conditions. It often has no clear symptoms, which is why it is sometimes called a “silent problem.”

The study also looked at different ways of defining high blood pressure. In the past, blood pressure was considered high if it reached 140 over 90. More recently, experts have lowered the threshold to 130 over 80 to catch problems earlier. The study found that both numbers remained important under both guidelines.

It also shows that both numbers matter. If either number is too high, it can increase your risk of serious problems in the future.
