The research team explored a different idea. They looked at whether NAC could stop the clotting process earlier, before it even begins. They found that NAC can break down the von Willebrand factor protein before it becomes sticky. This prevents it from trapping platelets and forming clots.
To test this, the scientists created a model that mimics blood flow in a narrowed artery, which is a common condition in heart disease. In this model, NAC completely stopped clots from forming. This was a very strong result and showed the drug’s potential.
The team then tested NAC in animals. The results were again very promising. NAC prevented clots from forming and did not increase the risk of bleeding. This is a key advantage over many existing treatments.
Another important finding was that the protective effect of NAC lasted even after the drug had left the bloodstream. This means it may continue to protect the body for several hours after use.
The researchers believe this discovery could be especially helpful for people who have already had a heart attack. These individuals are at high risk of having another event, especially in the early period after the first one. Using NAC during this time could help reduce that risk.
In the future, NAC might also be used as a daily treatment for people at high risk of heart disease or stroke. It could help prevent clots in a safe and affordable way.
