New hormone treatment could reverse fatty liver disease, study finds

A new scientific study has brought fresh hope for people affected by fatty liver disease, a condition that is becoming more common around the world.

Researchers have found that a natural hormone in the body, called FGF21, may be able to reverse serious liver damage, at least in animal studies.

The research was led by Dr. Matthew Potthoff and his team at the University of Oklahoma. Their findings were published in the journal Cell Metabolism, a well-known scientific journal that focuses on how the body uses energy and maintains health.

Fatty liver disease, now often called MASLD, happens when too much fat builds up in the liver. This condition is closely linked to modern lifestyles, including poor diet, lack of exercise, and obesity.

Over time, MASLD can become more serious and turn into a condition called MASH. In this stage, the liver becomes inflamed and scarred. If the damage continues, it can lead to cirrhosis, which is a severe and life-threatening condition.

Today, fatty liver disease affects a large part of the global population. Experts estimate that about 40 percent of people may have some level of this condition. Despite how common it is, there are very few effective treatments available.

In fact, only one drug has been approved so far to treat advanced forms of the disease. This makes new research especially important.

The hormone FGF21 is naturally produced by the liver. Scientists have been studying it for some time because it plays a role in how the body manages energy, fat, and sugar. In this new study, researchers discovered that FGF21 can send signals to the brain that help improve liver health.

To understand how this works, the scientists conducted experiments using mice with fatty liver disease. They gave the mice FGF21 and observed the effects. The results were very encouraging.

The mice not only had less fat in their livers, but they also showed a reduction in liver scarring. This is important because scarring, also known as fibrosis, is one of the most dangerous aspects of the disease.

One surprising finding was that these improvements happened even though the mice continued eating an unhealthy, high-fat diet. This suggests that FGF21 may be powerful enough to protect the liver even when diet is not ideal.

The researchers found that FGF21 works in two main ways. First, it sends signals to the brain. The brain then responds by adjusting nerve signals that help protect the liver.

Second, the hormone also acts directly on the liver to help reduce cholesterol levels. However, the study suggests that the communication between the liver and the brain is the most important part of this process.

Dr. Potthoff described this as a feedback system. The liver sends information to the brain through the hormone, and the brain sends signals back to support liver health. This kind of communication between organs is becoming an important area of research.

Interestingly, FGF21 works in a way that is similar to another group of medicines known as GLP-1 drugs. These drugs, such as Ozempic, are used to treat diabetes and support weight loss. Like FGF21, GLP-1 also sends signals through the brain to help control metabolism. This shows that the brain plays a key role in managing many important processes in the body.

The most exciting part of the study is that FGF21 was able to reverse liver damage, not just slow it down. This gives hope that future treatments could do more than simply manage the disease. They might actually help the liver heal.

However, it is important to remember that this research was done in mice. More studies are needed to see if the same effects will happen in humans. Scientists are already testing FGF21-based treatments in clinical trials, and the results so far are promising.

As research continues, this discovery may lead to new treatments for fatty liver disease and other related conditions. It also shows how understanding the body’s natural systems can help scientists develop better and more targeted therapies.
