Researchers from the University of Washington and other institutions are calling for a new health goal to fight high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.
They suggest using an 80-80-80 plan as a national policy to better manage this serious condition. Their study was led by Sarah J. Pickersgill and published in the journal Nature Medicine.
High blood pressure is one of the main causes of heart disease, which leads to many deaths around the world each day. Even though there are good treatments available, many people with high blood pressure are not getting the help they need.
The researchers found that only about 20% of people with high blood pressure are currently managing it with medicine.
There are many reasons for this low number. Some areas don’t have enough clinics or doctors. In other places, people don’t know they have high blood pressure, or they don’t understand why it’s important to treat it. Public health programs often don’t focus enough on the problem, especially in poorer countries.
To fix this, the researchers created a simple plan called the 80-80-80 model. It has three main goals:
1. Make sure 80% of people get tested for high blood pressure.
2. Of those diagnosed, 80% should receive treatment.
3. Of those treated, 80% should reach healthy blood pressure levels.
The team used computer models to show what would happen if every country reached this goal. The results were powerful: they estimated that it could prevent between 76 million and 130 million deaths around the world.
This plan wouldn’t just save lives. It would also reduce the number of people suffering from heart attacks, strokes, and other problems caused by high blood pressure. That means less pain, better health, and lower medical costs for millions of people.
The researchers say that this 80-80-80 goal is not only important, but also possible. With better testing, more education, and improved access to medicine, countries everywhere could make it happen. If adopted, it could become one of the most important steps in public health in the next few decades.
