Researchers from the University of Washington and other organizations are pushing for a new global goal to fight high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

They call this plan the 80-80-80 target. The goal is to make it a national policy in many countries to help prevent heart disease and save lives.

Their research, led by Sarah J. Pickersgill and her team, was published in the journal Nature Medicine. It suggests that using this simple plan could greatly reduce the number of people suffering or dying from hypertension worldwide.

Hypertension is one of the biggest causes of heart disease. Every day, many people around the world die from problems linked to high blood pressure. Even though there are good medicines available, many people are not getting the treatment they need.

The researchers looked at health data from many countries and found something surprising. Only 20% of people with high blood pressure are managing it properly with medicine. This means that 4 out of 5 people are not getting the care they need.

There are a few reasons for this. In many places, there are not enough health clinics or doctors. Some people don’t know they have high blood pressure because they have never been tested. In other areas, the government and public health systems are not doing enough to raise awareness or provide treatment.

To fix this, the team came up with the 80-80-80 plan. Here’s what it means:

First, 80% of people should get tested for high blood pressure.
Then, 80% of those diagnosed should get the proper treatment.
Finally, 80% of the people receiving treatment should have their blood pressure controlled to healthy levels.

The researchers ran models to see what would happen if this plan was used around the world. They found that it could prevent between 76 and 130 million deaths. That is a huge number of lives saved.

They also said that better blood pressure control would reduce heart problems and suffering. People would have fewer heart attacks, strokes, and other serious health issues.

This 80-80-80 plan is simple and powerful. The researchers believe it could become one of the most important public health successes in the coming decades. They think that all countries—whether rich or poor—can reach this goal if they make it a priority. If they do, millions of people could live longer and healthier lives.
