High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a health condition that affects many people all over the world.
It happens when your blood pushes too hard against the walls of your blood vessels.
This strong pressure can damage your heart, brain, and kidneys over time, increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other problems.
Doctors often treat high blood pressure with medicine. One common drug is chlorthalidone. It helps lower blood pressure, making the heart and blood vessels work more easily. But a new study from Columbia University has found that chlorthalidone may cause some serious side effects in some people.
To understand this better, imagine your blood vessels are like roads, and your blood is like traffic. When the cars move at a normal speed, everything is fine. But if the traffic moves too fast—like when blood pressure is too high—accidents are more likely.
In the body, these “accidents” can mean damage to your organs. That’s why it’s important to keep blood pressure under control with medicine, healthy food, exercise, and less stress.
The new research looked at the health records of more than 730,000 people who had used blood pressure medicine over 17 years. Scientists compared two common drugs: chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide. Both drugs helped lower blood pressure and protect the heart. But they had different side effects.
The study showed that people who took chlorthalidone were almost three times more likely to get a condition called hypokalemia. This happens when there is too little potassium in the blood. Potassium is a mineral that helps your muscles and nerves work, especially your heart.
If potassium gets too low, it can make you feel weak, tired, or even cause serious heart problems. In the study, 6.3% of people on chlorthalidone had low potassium, compared to only 1.9% of people on hydrochlorothiazide.
Chlorthalidone was also linked to more problems with electrolytes. Electrolytes are important minerals like sodium and potassium that help the body work properly. People on chlorthalidone had more issues with these minerals, which can affect the heart and muscles.
The study also found a higher chance of kidney problems in people who took chlorthalidone. The kidneys are important for cleaning the blood and balancing fluids. If the kidneys don’t work well, it can lead to serious health issues.
This doesn’t mean that everyone taking chlorthalidone will have these problems. Many people take it without any side effects. But the study may make doctors think more carefully before choosing this drug, especially if other options are available.
If you take blood pressure medicine, it’s important to visit your doctor regularly. If you use chlorthalidone, your doctor may check your potassium and kidney health. Don’t stop taking your medicine without talking to your doctor.
Besides taking medicine, there are other ways to help lower blood pressure. Eating fruits and vegetables, using less salt, exercising, and managing stress are all good habits. Doing things like walking, listening to music, or practicing meditation can also help keep your heart healthy.
Researchers will continue studying blood pressure drugs to make sure they are safe. If you or someone you know takes chlorthalidone, it’s important to stay informed and speak with your doctor if you don’t feel well. Taking care of your health means understanding the risks and benefits of your treatment.
