Type 2 diabetes is a long-term illness where the body has trouble keeping blood sugar levels normal.
This happens because of problems with insulin, a hormone that helps move sugar from the blood into the body’s cells.
More and more people in Canada are being diagnosed with this condition, and it has become a serious health issue.
Usually, people with type 2 diabetes take pills or insulin shots to manage their blood sugar. But many people are now looking for new ways to control their diabetes without having to rely on medications every day.
A new study has looked into a possible solution: ketone monoester drinks. These are popular supplements that might help people manage their blood sugar levels. The idea comes from ketogenic diets, which are very low in carbs.
When people eat this way, their bodies produce chemicals called ketones. These ketones help lower blood sugar and can even help reverse diabetes in some cases.
But sticking to a ketogenic diet can be hard. So researchers wanted to know if drinking a ketone supplement could give the same benefits without having to change the diet.
In the study, 15 people who were overweight and at risk of diabetes took part. They didn’t follow a ketogenic diet. First, they fasted overnight. Then, they drank a ketone supplement. After 30 minutes, they were given a sugary drink with 75 grams of sugar. The researchers then watched how their blood sugar levels changed.
The results were promising. After drinking the ketone supplement, participants were able to keep their blood sugar levels more stable—even after drinking the sugary drink. Their insulin levels didn’t change, which means the ketones helped manage blood sugar without needing extra insulin.
This shows that ketone drinks might help people with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes control their blood sugar—especially for those who find it hard to follow strict diets.
Still, the scientists say we need to be careful. Ketone supplements are not a cure for diabetes. We don’t yet know what happens when people take them for a long time. More studies are needed to find out if they’re safe and effective in the long run.
For now, ketone supplements could be an extra option for people looking for new ways to manage their condition. But it’s always important to talk to a doctor before starting any new supplement or making changes to diabetes treatment.
This research was led by Dr. Jonathan Little and published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It gives hope that in the future, people might have more choices for managing type 2 diabetes in easier and less invasive ways.
