Focus on this blood pressure number for better heart health

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a common health problem that affects people all over the world. It increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other serious health issues.

Doctors usually look at two numbers to measure blood pressure: systolic and diastolic. The systolic number shows the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats. The diastolic number shows the pressure when the heart rests between beats.

In the past, doctors believed that keeping the diastolic number between 70 and 90 was important. But a new study from researchers at NUI Galway and other institutions suggests we may need to rethink this idea.

The study looked at the health records of more than 47,000 people from different countries. It found that there’s no clear reason to worry about diastolic blood pressure being too low. The researchers saw no proof that lowering it too much caused harm.

Instead, they found that systolic blood pressure is much more important. People with systolic readings over 120 had a much higher chance of having a heart attack or stroke. Based on this, the scientists suggest aiming for systolic blood pressure between 100 and 130 mmHg.

This new focus could change how doctors treat high blood pressure. By paying more attention to systolic pressure and not worrying so much about low diastolic pressure, doctors might be able to better protect patients from heart problems.

It’s also a reminder that preventing high blood pressure in the first place is very important. Here are some simple steps to help keep your blood pressure in a healthy range:

Keep a healthy weight. Being overweight can raise blood pressure.
Eat a balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy.
Eat less salt. Too much salt can raise blood pressure. Try to stay under 2,300 mg a day.
Exercise regularly. Staying active helps control blood pressure and weight.
Limit alcohol. Men should have no more than two drinks a day, and women no more than one.
Don’t smoke. Smoking hurts your blood vessels and raises your risk of high blood pressure.
Manage stress. Try deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to relax.
Check your blood pressure regularly. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, so it’s important to monitor it.

In conclusion, this new research shows that focusing on systolic blood pressure may be the best way to treat and prevent problems caused by hypertension. With the right treatment and healthy habits, people can lower their risk and improve their overall health.
