New eye lens helps people see clearly without glasses

A new type of artificial lens for the eyes may help many people see clearly at all distances—near, far, and in between—without needing glasses.

This is good news for people getting surgery for cataracts or to correct vision problems.

The new lens is called the TECNIS PureSEE. It is a type of extended depth of field (EDF) lens. It was tested on about 200 patients across 17 sites in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The study was presented at the 43rd Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).

As people get older, they often develop a condition called presbyopia, which makes it hard to focus on close-up objects. The new EDF lens was designed to fix this problem during eye surgery.

The study looked at how well patients could see at different distances after getting the new lens. It also looked at whether they still needed glasses for reading and how satisfied they were with their vision.

The results were very promising. Almost all patients could see well in the distance and at arm’s length without glasses. Many could also read without glasses. About 96% of patients said they rarely or never needed glasses for distance vision, 93% said the same for intermediate vision, and 62% for near vision.

In terms of satisfaction, 96% of people were happy with their distance vision, 94% with intermediate vision, and 73% with near vision. Nearly all patients—96%—said they would recommend the lens to their family or friends.

Professor Oliver Findl, who presented the results, said that the lens gave excellent distance and intermediate vision and useful near vision. He also explained that because the lens uses a smooth surface, patients don’t see glare, halos, or starbursts at night like they might with other lenses.

Currently, people who need cataract surgery can choose from different types of lenses. A monofocal lens gives clear vision at just one distance. A multifocal lens has several focus points but may cause night vision problems. EDF lenses are newer and provide good distance and intermediate vision, though they may still require glasses for reading.

The TECNIS PureSEE lens is different because it is fully “refractive,” using smooth curves to focus light instead of rings. This makes night vision more comfortable and reduces side effects.

Dr. Joaquín Fernández, who did not take part in the research, said the findings are very encouraging. He explained that while no perfect lens has been created yet, this new lens offers more options for patients. He hopes to see more results from ongoing studies.

This large study shows that the new TECNIS PureSEE lens is safe, effective, and well-liked by patients. It improves vision at many distances with fewer side effects.

Although not perfect, it could be a great choice for people who want to reduce their need for glasses after surgery. Doctors may start offering this lens more often as part of eye surgery in the future.
