High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a health condition that affects millions of people worldwide.
To manage it, doctors often prescribe medications that help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of serious problems like heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.
One medication often used is chlorthalidone. It’s a type of water pill (diuretic) that helps remove extra salt and water from the body, which lowers blood pressure. But new research from Columbia University suggests that chlorthalidone might come with side effects that need more attention.
To understand this better, think of your blood vessels like highways and your blood like cars. When traffic flows smoothly, everything works fine.
But if the cars go too fast—like when your blood pressure is too high—there’s a higher chance of crashes. High blood pressure puts stress on your blood vessels, which can lead to serious damage over time.
In the recent study, researchers looked at the health records of more than 730,000 people who had been taking blood pressure medicine for 17 years. They focused on two common drugs: chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide. Both work to lower blood pressure, but they don’t have the same effects on the body.
The researchers found that people taking chlorthalidone were about three times more likely to develop a condition called hypokalemia. This happens when your body doesn’t have enough potassium.
Potassium is a mineral that helps your muscles, nerves, and heart work the right way. Without enough potassium, you might feel weak, tired, or even have heart rhythm problems.
About 6.3% of people on chlorthalidone had low potassium levels, compared to only 1.9% of those taking hydrochlorothiazide. That’s a big difference.
The study also showed that people taking chlorthalidone were more likely to have problems with their electrolytes. Electrolytes are chemicals in your body that help with important tasks like keeping your heartbeat steady. There was also a higher chance of kidney issues among those using chlorthalidone.
This doesn’t mean everyone who takes chlorthalidone will get sick. Many people take it without any problems. But the findings are strong enough that doctors may start rethinking how often they use it, especially since many currently prefer chlorthalidone over other options.
If you’re taking medication for high blood pressure, it’s important to see your doctor regularly. If you’re on chlorthalidone, your doctor may test your potassium and check how your kidneys are doing. It’s better to catch any problems early.
There are also many other ways to help control blood pressure. Eating a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, reducing salt, staying active, and avoiding smoking and too much alcohol can all help. Managing stress through relaxing activities like walking, stretching, or listening to music is also good for your heart.
Researchers will keep studying blood pressure drugs to make sure they are safe. If you’re using chlorthalidone, don’t panic. Just keep talking with your doctor and pay attention to how you feel. That way, you can keep your body’s “traffic” moving safely and smoothly.
