More than 37 million people in the United States are living with diabetes, and many of them have type 2 diabetes.
This condition used to mostly affect older adults, but now more and more young people are being diagnosed too.
People with type 2 diabetes usually need to take medicine to keep their blood sugar levels under control. Some even have to inject insulin every day, which can be uncomfortable and difficult to manage. But now, a new kind of treatment might offer a better way.
Scientists have introduced a new method called ReCET, which stands for Re-cellularization via Electroporation Therapy. This new treatment may help people with type 2 diabetes reduce or even stop their need for insulin injections.
ReCET works by sending tiny electric pulses to the inside lining of the small intestine. These pulses change how the intestine works and may help the body respond better to insulin. Doctors perform this treatment using a thin tube called an endoscope. They gently guide it through the mouth to reach the small intestine.
In a small study, 14 people with type 2 diabetes tried the ReCET treatment. After the procedure, they followed a special diet for two weeks. Then they began taking a diabetes drug called semaglutide. This drug can sometimes help people stop using insulin, though it doesn’t work for everyone.
The results were exciting. Most of the people in the study were able to stop using insulin injections while still keeping their blood sugar levels under control. The researchers believe that ReCET helps the body use insulin more effectively, which means patients may need less medicine to stay healthy.
This could be a big deal for many people. Living without daily insulin shots would make life easier and more comfortable. Of course, more studies are needed to make sure ReCET is safe and works well for everyone. But the early findings give hope that this treatment could change the way we manage type 2 diabetes.
While treatments like ReCET are exciting, it’s also important to remember the power of a healthy lifestyle. Eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol can help prevent or manage type 2 diabetes.
Researchers are always exploring new ways to help people with diabetes. Some are looking at diets like the MIND diet, which may protect against vision loss and memory problems. Others are studying drugs like metformin, which could slow down mental decline in people with diabetes.
If you or someone you know has diabetes, these new discoveries offer hope. Science is moving forward, and each new breakthrough brings us closer to better, easier ways to live with and manage diabetes.
