This skin problem may increase heart disease risk

A new study suggests that people with psoriasis, a common skin condition, may have a higher risk of developing heart disease. Researchers from The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University found a possible causal link between psoriasis and several types of heart disease.

Their findings, led by Ning Gao and published in Frontiers in Immunology, highlight the importance of heart health monitoring for psoriasis patients.

Psoriasis causes itchy, scaly patches on the skin, often appearing on the knees, elbows, and scalp. It is not just a skin problem—it is a chronic immune disorder, meaning the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, leading to inflammation.

Factors such as stress, infections, and cold weather can trigger flare-ups. While there is no cure, treatments like creams, light therapy, and medications help manage symptoms.

To investigate the connection between psoriasis and heart disease, researchers analyzed genetic data from people of European descent. They found that a genetic tendency for psoriasis was linked to a higher risk of heart failure, atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), heart attacks, valvular heart disease, and strokes caused by large artery blockages.

However, no link was found with other types of stroke, such as cardioembolic or small vessel strokes.

To ensure their findings were accurate, the team performed additional tests to check if other factors might be influencing the results. Their analysis confirmed a strong link, suggesting that psoriasis itself may contribute to heart disease risk.

Since heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, this study reinforces the need for early heart health screenings in people with psoriasis. Previous research has also pointed to an increased risk of cardiovascular problems in these patients, but this study strengthens the case for preventive care.

These findings show that psoriasis affects more than just the skin—it may also impact the heart and overall health. By recognizing this link, doctors can offer better care to psoriasis patients, including regular heart check-ups and lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of heart disease.
