Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in every cell of the body, playing an essential role in various functions. However, having too much cholesterol—especially LDL cholesterol, also known as “bad” cholesterol—can clog arteries and raise the risk of heart disease and stroke.
To manage high cholesterol, doctors often prescribe statins, a type of medication that lowers cholesterol production in the liver. Statins are effective, but they don’t work for everyone. Some people experience muscle and joint pain, making it hard to continue treatment, while others find that statins don’t lower their LDL cholesterol enough.
A New Alternative: Bempedoic Acid
For those who can’t take statins, a newer medication called bempedoic acid is showing promise as an alternative. A study presented at the Endocrine Society meeting in Chicago found that bempedoic acid effectively lowers cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
How Effective Is Bempedoic Acid?
The CLEAR Outcomes Trial, funded by Esperion Therapeutics (the makers of bempedoic acid), tested the drug in patients who had trouble with statins. The results showed:
- 21% reduction in LDL cholesterol
- 13% decrease in major cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes
This raised an important question: Can bempedoic acid lower heart disease risk as effectively as statins?
Further analysis provided a positive answer. Patients taking bempedoic acid had a similar reduction in heart-related risks compared to statin users who achieved the same drop in LDL cholesterol.
Why This Discovery Matters
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, making it crucial to have effective treatment options. Dr. A. Michael Lincoff, a lead researcher from the Cleveland Clinic, emphasized how important bempedoic acid could be for those who cannot tolerate statins or need additional cholesterol-lowering support.
A Step Forward in Heart Health
The introduction of bempedoic acid provides a valuable new tool in managing cholesterol. It offers hope for patients who previously had limited options, allowing them to lower their cholesterol and reduce their risk of heart disease.
This progress highlights the importance of medical research and innovation in improving heart health. With new treatments like bempedoic acid, doctors now have more ways to help people live healthier, longer lives.
