Plant-based supplements could help treat hearing loss in older people

Why Do We Lose Hearing as We Age?

Have you ever wondered why people start losing their hearing as they get older? It turns out that some specialized cells in our ears might be the culprits.

These cells, known as outer hair cells (OHCs), play a crucial role in helping us hear by amplifying sounds.

As we age, these cells lose their flexibility, meaning they can’t amplify sounds as well as they used to. And that leads to hearing loss.

But here’s the interesting part: Researchers have found that the loss of a substance called cholesterol in these cells might be to blame.

As people age, cholesterol levels in these OHCs seem to drop, affecting their performance. This new insight could pave the way for better treatments for age-related hearing loss.

What Did the Study Show?

Scientists from the University of Buenos Aires and the National University of Córdoba in Argentina decided to dig deeper into this issue. They published their findings in the journal PLOS Biology on August 24.

First, they looked at an enzyme known as CYP46A1 in the ear cells of mice. This enzyme is important because it helps manage cholesterol levels in cells.

They found that older mice had more of this enzyme and, as a result, less cholesterol in their OHCs.

To prove that the lack of cholesterol was causing hearing loss, they gave young mice a drug that increases the level of the CYP46A1 enzyme.

Sure enough, these mice experienced a drop in cholesterol and signs of hearing loss.

A Potential Solution: Plant-Based Cholesterol

Here’s where things get really exciting. The scientists knew that regular cholesterol couldn’t be easily added to the brain from the blood.

So they turned to plant-based compounds that mimic cholesterol, called phytosterols. These phytosterols can pass into the brain and might serve as a stand-in for the lost cholesterol.

When young mice with induced hearing loss were given a diet rich in phytosterols, their ear cells improved! This suggests that these plant-based compounds could potentially serve as a treatment for age-related hearing loss.

What Does This Mean for Us?

The study’s findings are a big deal because they could offer a convenient way to deal with hearing loss as we age.

Phytosterols are already available in over-the-counter supplements and are also found in foods like nuts and vegetable oils. Before we jump to conclusions, more research is needed, especially in humans. But it’s a promising start.

“In the present work, we show that aging triggers cholesterol loss from sensory cells of the inner ear,” said the researchers.

They believe this is the first evidence to suggest that phytosterols could be used to prevent or treat hearing loss related to age.

In summary, as we age, our ears might just need a “cholesterol boost” to keep us hearing clearly. And the best part? That boost might come from something as simple as a plant-based supplement.

It’s too early to say for sure, but it’s a promising avenue for future research and could give hope to millions suffering from hearing loss.
