Why science about dangerous chemicals isn’t reaching us

Scientists recently did a study that has big news for all of us.

They found out that a lot of important research about dangerous chemicals isn’t getting the attention it deserves.

These chemicals are called PFAS, and they can be bad for our health. But most of the time, when scientists find out something new about them, nobody hears about it.

What Are PFAS?

PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These are man-made chemicals that have been used in lots of products since the 1940s.

You can find them in everything from water-repellent fabrics and non-stick pans, to fire-fighting foams and even some types of food packaging.

They’ve been nicknamed “forever chemicals” because they stick around in the environment and in our bodies for a very long time.

What Did the Researchers Find?

Rebecca Fuoco and her team are from the Green Science Policy Institute. They looked at almost 300 studies about PFAS. These studies were all about how PFAS can harm people’s health.

They found out that the studies which told the world about their findings got twenty times more attention than the ones that stayed quiet.

Here’s the worrying part: only 8 out of 100 of the important studies made any noise about their findings. That means lots of vital information about PFAS and our health isn’t getting out there.

In fact, some studies found links between these chemicals and really serious health problems, like premature babies and certain types of cancer. But without a public announcement, these findings stayed hidden away.

Why Does This Matter?

The problem is that if we don’t know about these studies, we can’t do anything about their findings. It’s like having a warning sign that nobody can see.

If scientists find out that PFAS can harm our health, we need to know about it. We need to understand how to protect ourselves. But right now, too many of these warning signs are being missed.

Also, other scientists might not hear about these studies either. This means they can’t use the new knowledge to help their own research.

So, the hidden studies don’t get as much attention from other scientists. They get cited less, which in the world of science, is a big deal. It’s like getting fewer likes on a social media post.

What Can Be Done?

Rebecca Fuoco and her team believe that scientists and their universities should work harder to tell the world about their research. They should use things like press releases to share their findings.

This isn’t just a good idea; it’s their duty. After all, most science is paid for by the public. That’s you and me. So, we have the right to know what our money has found out.

The team has even put together some tips for scientists who want to make their research more public. They’ve got videos, templates and other useful things to help them get the word out there.

They hope this will make a big difference and ensure that important research about PFAS doesn’t stay hidden away.

By sharing their findings more widely, scientists can help everyone to understand the risks better.

That way, we can all make more informed decisions about our health. After all, knowledge is power, and we all deserve to have that power.
