Bipolar disorder, also called ‘manic depression’, is a mood disorder defined by periods of intense, heightened emotion called mood episodes.

The three types of mood episodes are manic, hypomanic (less severe manic episodes), and depressive.

Mania is a psychological condition that causes a person to experience unreasonable euphoria, very intense moods, hyperactivity, and delusions.

Hypomania is a condition in which you display a revved up energy or activity level, mood or behavior.

Depression is a low-energy or decreased mood state commonly experienced by people with bipolar disorder.

A person who is depressed can almost seem as if they’re moving in slow motion. They have trouble making decisions and feel discouraged when fun activities which lifted their mood no longer work.
