Your Fingertip May Reveal Hidden Signs of Stress and Anxiety

Your fingertip may reveal more about stress and emotional health than scientists once realized.

An international team of researchers has found that tiny changes in blood flow and activity in tissue beneath the skin may be linked to symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.

The researchers used a wearable device that shines light into the fingertip without breaking the skin. It measures blood moving through some of the body’s smallest blood vessels and collects other information about how the surrounding tissue is working.

The study involved experts from Aston University and researchers from several countries. The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Communications Medicine in 2026.

Mental health conditions are usually assessed through conversations, questionnaires and evaluations by trained health professionals. These methods are essential because feelings, thoughts and behavior cannot be understood from a single physical measurement.

However, emotional distress can also affect the body. Stress can change heart rate, breathing, blood vessel activity, body temperature and the way cells use energy, which has led scientists to ask whether some of these changes could be measured objectively.

The new study included 132 adults between 18 and 94 years old from 19 countries. Before their fingertip measurements were taken, participants completed a widely used questionnaire containing 21 questions about symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress.

The wearable device then repeatedly examined the participants’ fingertips. It measured blood flow through very small vessels beneath the skin, along with skin temperature, heart rate and signals connected with how cells produce and use energy.

The fingertip is useful for this type of research because it contains many tiny blood vessels close to the skin. Light-based technology can therefore collect information about circulation without needles, blood samples or other invasive procedures.

After collecting the measurements, the scientists used machine learning to search for patterns. Machine learning is a form of computer analysis that can examine many pieces of information at the same time and identify combinations that might be difficult for people to notice.

The computer models compared the physical measurements with participants’ questionnaire scores. They were able to separate people reporting stress-related symptoms from those without those symptoms with moderate success.

Changes in blood flow were among the useful signals. Measurements linked to activity and energy use in the tissue also contributed to the computer models, suggesting that emotional distress may be associated with several small physical changes rather than one simple biological sign.

This idea makes biological sense because the brain and body are closely connected. When a person experiences stress or anxiety, the nervous system can change the speed of the heartbeat and cause blood vessels to narrow or widen.

Long-lasting stress can also affect hormones and metabolism. These effects vary greatly between individuals, but together they may create physical patterns that sensitive technology can detect.

Professor Edik Rafailov from the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies, who jointly supervised the research, said the findings provide early evidence that mental distress can be accompanied by measurable changes in blood flow and tissue activity.

He emphasized that the technology could eventually provide another source of information alongside traditional mental health assessments.

Importantly, the device cannot currently diagnose depression, anxiety or another mental health condition. The participants were grouped according to questionnaire answers rather than formal diagnoses made by psychiatrists, psychologists or other mental health professionals.

This distinction is crucial. A person can report temporary stress or anxiety without having a mental health disorder, while someone with a diagnosed condition may have symptoms that change considerably from day to day.

The researchers therefore describe the work as an early proof-of-concept study. Larger studies involving clinical patients will be needed to determine whether the physical patterns remain reliable across different ages, health conditions, cultures and everyday situations.

If future research is successful, wearable measurements might one day help people and health professionals follow changes in well-being over time. Such information could potentially complement conversations and questionnaires rather than replacing them.

The study also created a dataset containing physical measurements from participants across a broad age range and many countries. Researchers may be able to use this information to further investigate connections between emotional health, circulation and cellular activity.

Overall, the results are interesting because they show that mental distress may leave subtle signs in the body that can be measured through the skin. The combination of light-based sensors and computer analysis could eventually offer a convenient way to monitor some of these changes.

However, the study is small, and moderate classification accuracy is far from what would be required for a dependable medical test. Questionnaire scores are also not the same as clinical diagnoses, and physical signals can be affected by exercise, medicines, temperature, cardiovascular health and many other factors.

For now, the strongest conclusion is not that a fingertip can diagnose depression or anxiety, but that the body may contain useful additional information about emotional distress.

The research is a promising first step, but much larger and carefully controlled clinical studies are needed before the technology can be used to guide mental health care.
