Popular Blood Pressure Drug May Harm Gut Health

High blood pressure is one of the most common long-term health problems around the world. If it is not treated, it can greatly increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.

Another common health condition is diverticulosis. This happens when small pouches develop in the wall of the large intestine, especially as people get older. Many people never know they have these pouches because they cause no symptoms. However, some people develop pain, infection, bleeding, or inflammation that can require medical treatment.

A research team from Imperial College London wanted to find out whether commonly prescribed blood pressure medicines might affect the risk of developing other diseases.

The study was led by Dr. Dipender Gill and was published in the journal Hypertension. The researchers focused on three widely used groups of medicines: ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, and calcium channel blockers.

Instead of carrying out a traditional clinical trial, the scientists used a genetic research method. This approach examines naturally occurring genetic differences that produce effects similar to certain medicines. By studying these genetic patterns, researchers can estimate the possible long-term effects of drug treatment without asking people to change their medication.

The team first identified the proteins that these medicines act on to lower blood pressure. They then analysed genetic information from around 750,000 people. Much of the information came from the UK Biobank, one of the world’s largest collections of health and genetic data, which has helped researchers investigate many diseases.

The scientists examined whether the genetic changes linked to these medicines were connected with almost 900 different health conditions. Most of the medicines did not show strong links with unexpected illnesses. However, one finding stood out for a specific group of calcium channel blockers known as non-dihydropyridines.

According to the study, these medicines appeared to be linked with a higher chance of developing diverticulosis. The researchers believe this may happen because the medicines can slow the movement of food through the intestines. When waste moves more slowly, pressure inside the bowel may increase, making it easier for small pouches to develop over time.

Although the findings are important, the researchers stressed that people should not stop taking their blood pressure medicine on their own.

Keeping blood pressure under control remains one of the best ways to reduce the risk of life-threatening heart disease and stroke. Any concerns about medicines should always be discussed with a doctor, who can explain the benefits and risks for each individual.

The study highlights why ongoing research into widely used medicines is so valuable. Drugs that have been used safely for many years can still reveal new information as larger studies become available. Understanding these effects allows doctors to give patients more personalised advice and monitor for possible problems when needed.

More research will be needed to confirm exactly how these medicines may affect the digestive system and whether some people are at greater risk than others.
