
Type 2 diabetes has become a major public health challenge across the world.
The disease affects hundreds of millions of people and increases the risk of heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, and other serious health problems.
Although healthy eating and regular exercise remain the best-known ways to reduce risk, scientists continue searching for other factors that may also make a difference.
A growing number of researchers believe the places where people live may influence their health. Access to trees, gardens, and parks has already been linked to better mental health, lower stress, and more physical activity. A new study now suggests these green spaces may also reduce the chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
Researchers from the University of Queensland examined health information from more than 19,000 participants in the UK Biobank. They compared diabetes rates with the amount of green space available around each person’s home.
The team looked at two types of green space. One was whether people had a sizeable garden at home. The other was the number of parks located within about half a mile, or 800 meters, of their homes.
People with home gardens had a 6.8% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those without gardens. Living close to several parks was also linked to a 5.7% lower risk.
According to lead author Dr. Chinonso Odebeatu, the findings show that green spaces should be viewed as an important public health resource instead of simply being attractive features in neighborhoods. As cities become more crowded, planning decisions may have long-term effects on the health of future generations.
There are several possible reasons why gardens and parks could help. Gardening involves regular movement, while nearby parks make it easier to walk, jog, play sports, or simply spend more time outside.
Time in nature may also help people feel calmer and reduce stress, which is known to affect blood sugar and overall health. Sunlight can help the body produce vitamin D, and contact with natural environments may support healthy gut bacteria and the immune system.
The researchers caution that their study does not prove that gardens directly prevent diabetes. People who choose to live near parks or maintain gardens may also have other healthy habits that were not fully measured.
Even so, the results add to growing evidence that healthier neighborhoods may support healthier lives. Small changes in urban design, such as protecting green spaces and creating community gardens, could have benefits that extend far beyond recreation.
The study was published in BMC Public Health. The researchers hope the findings encourage governments, planners, and developers to include more accessible green areas in future housing projects.
Overall, this research provides an interesting new perspective on diabetes prevention. The study is strengthened by its large sample size, but its observational design means cause and effect cannot be confirmed.
More research is needed to learn whether creating new gardens or parks directly lowers diabetes risk. Even so, the evidence suggests that investing in greener communities may be a practical way to support both physical and mental health while helping reduce the growing burden of type 2 diabetes.
