How Gut Bacteria Could Make Food Allergy Worse

Food allergies affect millions of people and can range from mild discomfort to life-threatening reactions.

Scientists have long known that the immune system plays a central role, but they are increasingly discovering that the digestive system may also have an important influence. New research points to the gut as a possible key to understanding why some allergic reactions become much more severe than others.

In a study published in The Journal of Immunology, researchers from the University of Minnesota investigated how gut bacteria and intestinal health affect food allergies. Their experiments used mice with naturally different gut microbiomes, allowing the scientists to explore how these differences changed immune responses.

The gut microbiome is made up of trillions of helpful bacteria that support digestion, produce important nutrients, and help train the immune system. These microbes also help maintain the protective lining of the intestines. If this lining becomes damaged, substances that normally stay inside the gut can leak into the bloodstream, a condition often called a leaky gut.

When food allergies were triggered in the mice, those with leakier intestines developed much more severe symptoms. They also showed major changes in important immune cells. Allergy-promoting Th2 cells increased, while regulatory T cells that normally help control immune responses became less common.

The scientists made another interesting observation when they housed mice from the two groups together. The gut bacteria of the mice with milder allergies gradually changed to resemble those of the more severely affected animals. At the same time, their allergic reactions also became worse.

This result suggests that the gut microbiome itself may influence how strongly the immune system reacts to food. Instead of being fixed, allergy severity may partly depend on the balance of bacteria living in the digestive tract.

The researchers believe this discovery could eventually lead to new treatments. Rather than only avoiding certain foods or treating allergic reactions after they occur, future therapies might aim to restore healthier gut bacteria or strengthen the intestinal barrier.

Many important questions still remain unanswered. Scientists still need to identify which bacteria are responsible and understand exactly how increased intestinal permeability changes immune cell behaviour. Human studies will also be necessary before any new treatments become available.

Even so, this research adds another piece to the growing picture connecting gut health with diseases throughout the body. It also supports the idea that the digestive system and immune system constantly communicate with one another.

Overall, the study provides valuable new evidence that gut microbes may shape the severity of food allergies. Although the findings are based on mice and should not yet be applied directly to people, they open a promising area of research that could eventually improve the prevention and treatment of food allergies.
