
Creatinine is a waste product that your body makes every day as your muscles work and naturally break down.
Healthy kidneys filter creatinine from the blood and remove it through urine.
Because of this, a simple blood test that measures creatinine can provide valuable information about how well your kidneys are working.
If the level is higher than expected, it does not automatically mean you have kidney disease, but it is a sign that your doctor should investigate further.
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that filter waste, remove extra fluid, balance minerals, and help control blood pressure. When they are healthy, creatinine is cleared from the bloodstream efficiently.
If the kidneys become damaged or slow down, creatinine begins to build up in the blood.
For most adults, normal creatinine levels are roughly between 0.6 and 1.3 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), although the normal range varies depending on age, sex, muscle mass, and overall health.
High creatinine itself usually does not cause symptoms. Instead, it is a warning sign that kidney function may be reduced. One of the most common reasons for raised creatinine is chronic kidney disease, also known as CKD.
This condition develops slowly over many years and often causes no obvious symptoms in its early stages. Research published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases has shown that creatinine levels may rise before people notice any signs that their kidneys are becoming less effective.
However, chronic kidney disease is not the only possible cause. Dehydration can temporarily increase creatinine because there is less fluid in the bloodstream.
A sudden decline in kidney function, called acute kidney injury, can also cause levels to rise quickly. Infections, urinary tract blockages, and some medicines, including certain antibiotics and anti-inflammatory painkillers, may also affect kidney function.
Doctors rarely rely on creatinine alone. They also calculate the estimated glomerular filtration rate, or eGFR, which estimates how much blood the kidneys filter every minute. Looking at creatinine and eGFR together gives a much clearer picture of kidney health.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, an eGFR below 60 that lasts for three months or longer is one of the main signs of chronic kidney disease.
Sometimes, high creatinine has a simple explanation. Very intense exercise can temporarily increase creatinine because muscles produce more of it during heavy activity. People with greater muscle mass may also naturally have slightly higher levels.
For these reasons, doctors often repeat the blood test after a short time before making a diagnosis, especially if there are no other signs of kidney disease.
If an ongoing kidney problem is found, treatment focuses on slowing further damage rather than simply lowering creatinine.
Doctors may recommend controlling blood pressure, managing diabetes carefully, drinking enough fluids, avoiding medicines that can harm the kidneys, and following a kidney-friendly diet that limits salt and, in some cases, protein. Some people are referred to a kidney specialist, called a nephrologist, for further testing and long-term care.
When kidney disease becomes severe, creatinine levels can rise much higher and symptoms may appear.
These can include tiredness, swelling of the legs or feet, nausea, confusion, itching, or difficulty breathing. In advanced cases, treatments such as dialysis or a kidney transplant may be needed to replace lost kidney function.
A high creatinine result should never be ignored, but it should also not cause unnecessary panic. It is a signal that more evaluation is needed to find the cause.
