
Spending hours each day on social media may be more closely connected to depression than many other parts of daily life, according to a large study that examined more than a decade of survey data.
Researchers from the University of Cincinnati and Northwestern University found that social media use was one of the strongest predictors of people reporting depression. Its predictive importance was greater than factors including education, employment and time spent watching television, playing video games or browsing the wider internet.
The study was published in the journal npj Mental Health Research. It analyzed 11 years of information from the Media Behaviors and Influence Study, covering the period beginning in 2014.
The researchers found a particularly notable pattern among people who reported spending at least 150 minutes, or two and a half hours, on social media each day. At that level of use, greater social media consumption was consistently associated with self-reported depression.
Importantly, the same pattern appeared in every one of the 11 years examined. This consistency suggests that the connection was not limited to one unusual year or a particular stage in the development of social media.
Depression is one of the world’s most common mental health conditions. It can affect mood, motivation, sleep, concentration, relationships and people’s ability to enjoy activities they previously found rewarding.
At the same time, social media has become deeply embedded in everyday life. People use platforms to communicate with friends, follow news, watch entertainment, participate in communities and increasingly consume an endless stream of recommended content.
Scientists have been studying the possible mental health effects of this change for years. However, much of the earlier research has concentrated on teenagers and young adults or has grouped different forms of screen use together.
The new study attempted to separate social media from activities such as watching television, browsing websites and playing video games. It also included adults across a much wider age range.
The researchers examined 183,300 anonymous surveys completed by adults between ages 18 and 70. The data came from the Media Behaviors and Influence Study, an annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics.
The survey contains 1,318 questions covering many aspects of people’s lives and behavior. It also includes 31 measures related to health, including whether respondents reported having depression.
Researchers then used machine learning to search this large collection of information for patterns. Machine learning allows computers to compare many variables at the same time and identify which ones are most useful for predicting a particular outcome.
Social media repeatedly stood out.
According to corresponding author Hans Breiter, a professor at the University of Cincinnati, the association between depression and social media remained clear across repeated scientific tests covering all 11 years.
The analysis also suggested that social media became a stronger predictor of depression as the years passed. Its importance eventually exceeded several other activities involving screens.
That distinction matters because spending time online is not a single behavior. Watching a movie, searching for information, playing a game with friends and continuously scrolling through short social media posts may affect people in very different ways.
The researchers suggest that social media itself may therefore deserve particular attention rather than treating all screen time as equally harmful.
One possible explanation involves how social media has changed. Early platforms were largely designed around communicating with people users already knew, but modern feeds often contain huge amounts of content created by strangers.
Algorithms can continuously recommend new posts, videos and other material based on what keeps a person watching. This can make scrolling easy to continue long after someone originally intended to stop.
The study’s authors argue that spending large amounts of time passively consuming this content may also take time away from activities that support mental well-being. These could include face-to-face relationships, exercise, hobbies, work, sleep and activities that provide a sense of meaning or achievement.
However, the findings do not prove that social media directly causes depression.
That is an important limitation. People who are already depressed might spend more time online because they have less energy for other activities, feel socially isolated or use social media as a distraction.
The relationship could also work in both directions. Heavy social media use might contribute to poorer mental health in some people, while depression itself might encourage heavier social media use.
Other factors that were not fully measured could also influence both behaviors. For example, loneliness, financial stress, physical illness or difficult relationships might affect both a person’s mental health and how much time they spend online.
The 150-minute figure should therefore not be interpreted as a precise point at which social media suddenly becomes dangerous. It is better understood as the level at which the researchers observed a consistent statistical relationship with self-reported depression across the datasets.
Another limitation is that depression was self-reported rather than necessarily established through a detailed clinical diagnosis. People’s estimates of how much time they spend on social media may also differ from automatically recorded phone or app data.
Even with these limitations, the enormous number of surveys and the repeated pattern across 11 years make the findings worth attention. The study also strengthens the argument that researchers should examine social media separately from general screen time.
The findings do not necessarily mean people need to abandon social media completely. The researchers suggest practical ways to reduce habitual use, including turning off notifications, setting time limits and logging out after using an account.
Overall, the research adds substantial evidence to the growing concern about very heavy social media use and mental health. Its strongest contribution is showing that the association with depression remained visible across a large adult population and over many years.
But the study should be viewed as evidence of a strong and persistent association, not final proof of cause and effect. Future research that follows people’s mental health and actual social media behavior over time will be especially important for determining whether reducing social media use can directly reduce depression risk.
