
Doctors have long known that the mouth is closely connected with the rest of the body. People with severe gum disease often have higher levels of inflammation, and previous studies have linked poor oral health with heart disease.
A new investigation now suggests that one common mouth bacterium may contribute to a dangerous heart valve disorder.
The study was presented at the American Heart Association’s Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Scientific Sessions 2026 by researchers from Fuwai Hospital in Beijing. It has not yet completed peer review, so the results should be viewed as early evidence rather than final proof.
Researchers investigated calcific aortic valve stenosis, one of the most common heart valve diseases in older adults. In this condition, calcium slowly builds up on the aortic valve until it becomes stiff and narrow. Eventually the heart struggles to pump blood efficiently, and many patients require valve replacement surgery.
The scientists focused on Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium that plays a major role in periodontitis. This infection damages the gums, destroys supporting tissues around the teeth and can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream during everyday activities such as brushing or chewing.
Heart valve samples collected during surgery showed much higher amounts of this bacterium in calcified valves than in comparison valves. Although other bacteria were also present, P. gingivalis showed one of the biggest differences between diseased and non-diseased tissue.
Animal experiments helped explain what might be happening. Mice exposed to live bacteria developed more calcium deposits in their heart valves and signs of aortic stenosis. Antibiotics reduced these changes, suggesting the bacteria itself was contributing to disease development.
The researchers also discovered that the bacteria activated IL-1β, a protein that promotes inflammation. Blocking this pathway greatly reduced valve damage, pointing to inflammation as a possible target for future medicines.
Currently there are no drugs that can prevent or slow calcific aortic valve stenosis. If future studies confirm these findings, improving oral health or developing treatments that block this inflammatory process could become part of future prevention strategies.
The study also reminds people that healthy gums are important for more than protecting teeth. Daily brushing, flossing, avoiding smoking and regular dental visits remain the best ways to reduce gum disease and maintain good oral health.
The findings are scientifically interesting because they identify a possible mechanism linking gum disease bacteria with heart valve calcification.
However, the research was mainly based on laboratory work, human tissue samples and mice, so it cannot prove the same process occurs in patients. Well-designed clinical studies are essential before any changes to medical practice can be recommended.
