A team of scientists from Stellenbosch University has made a surprising discovery that could change how people think about Cannabis leaves.

While much of the public attention has focused on the plant’s well-known cannabinoids, researchers have now found a rare group of natural compounds in the leaves that may also have important health benefits. The study was published in the Journal of Chromatography A.

Many people know Cannabis because of compounds such as THC and CBD. These chemicals have been widely studied for their effects on the body and brain.

However, Cannabis is a very complex plant. Scientists estimate that it contains more than 750 different natural chemicals. Many of these substances have not been fully explored, and researchers believe some could have useful medical properties.

In the new study, the research team looked closely at substances called phenolic compounds. These are natural chemicals that plants produce to protect themselves from damage caused by sunlight, insects, diseases, and other environmental stresses.

In many fruits, vegetables, tea, and herbs, phenolic compounds are linked with health benefits because they can help reduce inflammation, protect cells from damage caused by harmful molecules known as free radicals, and may even lower the risk of some diseases.

The researchers studied three commercial Cannabis varieties grown in South Africa. Using advanced laboratory methods, they identified 79 different phenolic compounds in the leaves. Even more exciting was the discovery that 25 of these compounds had never before been reported in Cannabis.

Among these newly identified chemicals were 16 rare compounds called flavoalkaloids. Scientists have found flavoalkaloids in only a small number of plants, making their discovery in Cannabis especially surprising.

Most of these rare compounds were found in the leaves of only one Cannabis variety. This suggests that different plant strains can produce very different chemical profiles. Understanding these differences may help researchers select or breed plants with specific health-related properties in the future.

Dr. Magriet Muller, an analytical chemist at Stellenbosch University who led the research, explained that studying phenolic compounds is challenging.

They are often present in very small amounts and have complicated chemical structures that are difficult to separate and identify. Finding the rare flavoalkaloids was an exciting moment because nobody had previously reported them in Cannabis.

To make the discovery, the team used highly advanced laboratory technology, including two-dimensional liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry.

These powerful techniques allowed the scientists to separate hundreds of chemicals and identify them with great accuracy. The same methods have previously helped researchers study the natural compounds found in rooibos tea, grapes, and wine.

Professor André de Villiers praised the quality of the work and pointed out that scientists are only beginning to understand the full chemistry of Cannabis. Although cannabinoids remain important, many other natural compounds in the plant could also contribute to its biological effects and possible medical uses.

One of the most interesting findings is that Cannabis leaves, which are often discarded during cultivation and processing, may contain valuable natural substances. Instead of being treated as agricultural waste, these leaves could become a useful source of compounds for future medical, nutritional, or pharmaceutical research.

More studies will be needed to understand exactly how these newly discovered flavoalkaloids affect the human body and whether they can be developed into new treatments.

This discovery highlights how much remains to be learned about one of the world’s most studied plants. As scientists continue exploring Cannabis beyond its famous cannabinoids, they may uncover many more natural compounds with the potential to improve human health.
