Cannabis is usually known for the compounds that affect the brain and mood, especially substances like THC and CBD.
These compounds have received worldwide attention for both medical and recreational use. But scientists are now discovering that Cannabis may contain many other chemicals that could also have important health benefits.
Researchers at Stellenbosch University in South Africa have made a surprising discovery inside Cannabis leaves.
For the first time, scientists found a rare group of compounds called flavoalkaloids in the plant. These compounds are very unusual in nature and are known for their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
The discovery is important because antioxidants help protect the body from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals.
Over time, free radical damage has been linked to aging and diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and brain disorders. Scientists are always searching for natural compounds that can help reduce this damage and improve health.
The study was led by Dr. Magriet Muller, an analytical chemist at Stellenbosch University. Her research team examined three commercial Cannabis strains that were grown in South Africa.
The scientists wanted to better understand the plant’s phenolic compounds, which are natural chemicals commonly found in fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, and other plants.
Phenolic compounds are well known because many of them have beneficial effects on human health. Some can reduce inflammation, some may help protect cells from damage, and others have shown anti-cancer potential in laboratory studies. These compounds are often connected to the health benefits of plant-based foods and herbal medicines.
When the researchers carefully analyzed the Cannabis samples, they identified a total of 79 phenolic compounds. Even more exciting was the discovery that 25 of these compounds had never been reported in Cannabis before. Among those newly identified substances were 16 rare flavoalkaloids.
The flavoalkaloids were mostly found in the leaves of one particular Cannabis strain. This was especially interesting because Cannabis leaves are often ignored or treated as waste during commercial production. Most attention is usually focused on the flowers because they contain the highest levels of cannabinoids like THC and CBD.
The discovery suggests that Cannabis leaves may hold hidden medical value that scientists have overlooked for many years. Instead of being discarded, the leaves could someday become useful for health research or for developing new plant-based products.
Dr. Muller explained that studying phenolic compounds is very challenging because they exist in extremely small amounts and have very complicated chemical structures. Finding flavoalkaloids was even more surprising because these compounds are considered very rare in plants.
The research team used highly advanced scientific equipment to make the discovery possible. They combined two-dimensional liquid chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry. These techniques allow scientists to separate tiny chemical substances inside plants and identify them very precisely.
Although the names of these technologies sound complicated, the basic idea is simple. The machines act almost like extremely powerful sorting and detection systems. They can separate hundreds of chemicals inside a plant sample and identify each one based on its unique structure.
The same scientific methods have previously been used by researchers to study other plant products from South Africa, including rooibos tea, grapes, and wine. This experience helped the team carefully analyze the Cannabis compounds in great detail.
Professor André de Villiers, who supervised the study, said the findings show how much scientists still have to learn about Cannabis. While most public discussion focuses on cannabinoids that influence mood or pain, the plant actually contains more than 750 known chemical compounds.
Researchers believe many of these compounds may have their own biological effects and possible medical uses. The discovery of flavoalkaloids adds another piece to the puzzle and may encourage more scientists to explore the hidden chemistry of Cannabis.
The study also highlights how plants often contain far more complexity than people realize. Many medicines originally came from plants, including aspirin and some cancer drugs. Discovering new natural compounds can sometimes lead to future treatments or health products.
The researchers believe this discovery could open new areas of research into the medicinal value of Cannabis leaves. Scientists may now study whether these rare compounds could someday be used in therapies related to inflammation, oxidative stress, or chronic diseases.
The findings were published in the scientific journal Journal of Chromatography A. The study reminds us that even well-known plants can still hold surprising secrets waiting to be discovered.
