High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is one of the most common health problems in the world. It affects millions of people and often has no clear symptoms. Many people do not even know they have it until it causes serious problems.
Over time, high blood pressure can damage blood vessels and organs, increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease. Because of this, doctors often call it a “silent killer.”
Most people with high blood pressure need to take medicine every day. However, this can be difficult. Some people forget to take their pills, while others stop because of side effects or busy schedules. Because of these challenges, scientists have been searching for new ways to treat this condition that are easier and more convenient.
Now, a new drug called zilebesiran may offer a promising solution. In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), researchers tested whether this new medicine could safely lower blood pressure with only a few doses each year.
The study was led by Dr. George L. Bakris and his team at the University of Chicago. It was a phase 2 clinical trial, which means it was designed to test how well the drug works and how safe it is in real patients before moving on to larger trials.
A total of 377 adults with high blood pressure took part in the study. Of these, 302 people received zilebesiran, while 75 people received a placebo, which is a treatment that looks the same but has no active medicine. This helps researchers compare results fairly.
The trial lasted six months. Participants were divided into groups and given different doses of the drug. Some received 150 mg, 300 mg, or 600 mg. Some people received the drug only once every six months, while others received a 300 mg dose every three months. This allowed researchers to study how long the drug works and what dose is most effective.
The results were very encouraging. People who received zilebesiran had a clear drop in their blood pressure. The researchers focused on systolic blood pressure, which is the top number in a blood pressure reading. It shows how much pressure is in the arteries when the heart beats.
To get accurate results, the researchers used a 24-hour blood pressure monitor. This device measures blood pressure throughout the day and night, giving a more complete picture than a single reading in a clinic.
After three months, people taking zilebesiran had a drop in systolic blood pressure of about 14 to 17 mm Hg more than those taking the placebo. This is considered a meaningful improvement and could lower the risk of serious heart problems.
Even after six months, the benefits continued. For example, people who received 300 mg every three months still had blood pressure about 10 mm Hg lower than before. In contrast, people in the placebo group actually saw their blood pressure increase by nearly 7 mm Hg.
Safety is always a key concern with new medicines. In this study, some people taking zilebesiran reported mild side effects, such as minor discomfort. About 61% of people in the treatment group reported some side effects, compared to 51% in the placebo group.
However, serious side effects were less common in people taking zilebesiran. Only 3.6% of patients in the treatment group had serious problems, compared to 6.7% in the placebo group. This suggests that the drug is generally safe, although more studies are needed to confirm this over a longer time.
One of the most exciting features of zilebesiran is how long it lasts in the body. Instead of taking a pill every day, patients may only need an injection once every three to six months. This could make treatment much easier and help people stay on track with their care.
It is important to note that the study was funded by Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, the company that developed zilebesiran. Some of the researchers also have links to the company. This does not mean the results are wrong, but it does mean that independent studies are needed in the future to confirm the findings.
Overall, this research suggests that zilebesiran could become a new and powerful option for treating high blood pressure. If future studies confirm these results, this drug may help many people better control their blood pressure and reduce their risk of serious disease.
