Study finds a new drug for lowering cholesterol

Cholesterol is a substance that your body needs, but too much of it can become dangerous. It is found in every cell and helps build cell walls and produce important hormones.

However, when cholesterol levels become too high, especially the type known as LDL or “bad” cholesterol, it can start to cause problems in the body.

LDL cholesterol can slowly build up inside the walls of blood vessels. Over time, this buildup forms plaques that make the arteries narrower and harder. This makes it more difficult for blood to flow through the body.

When blood flow is reduced, it increases the risk of serious health problems such as heart attacks and strokes. These conditions remain some of the leading causes of death around the world.

To manage high cholesterol, doctors often prescribe medications called statins. Statins work by reducing the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver. They are widely used and have helped many people lower their LDL cholesterol and reduce their risk of heart disease.

However, statins are not suitable for everyone. Some people experience side effects, such as muscle pain or joint discomfort, which can make it difficult to continue taking the medication. Others may find that statins do not lower their cholesterol levels enough, even when taken regularly.

Because of these challenges, researchers have been looking for other treatment options. One newer medication that has gained attention is called bempedoic acid. This drug works in a different way from statins but still helps reduce cholesterol levels.

Bempedoic acid has been tested in a large study known as the CLEAR Outcomes Trial. This study focused on people who could not tolerate statins and examined whether this new medication could still help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart problems.

The results of the study were shared at the Endocrine Society’s 2023 meeting in Chicago. They showed that people taking bempedoic acid experienced a noticeable drop in their LDL cholesterol levels. On average, LDL cholesterol was reduced by about 21 percent. This is a meaningful reduction, especially for people who have limited treatment options.

More importantly, the study also looked at real health outcomes. It found that people taking bempedoic acid had a 13 percent lower risk of major heart-related events. These events included heart attacks, strokes, and other serious conditions linked to heart disease.

At first, scientists were unsure whether this new drug could protect the heart in the same way that statins do. Lowering cholesterol is important, but not all cholesterol-lowering drugs provide the same level of heart protection. However, further analysis of the study showed that bempedoic acid provided heart benefits similar to those seen with statins.

Dr. A. Michael Lincoff from the Cleveland Clinic, one of the researchers involved in the study, highlighted the importance of these findings. He noted that heart disease continues to be the leading cause of illness and death worldwide. Because of this, having more treatment options is very important.

He explained that bempedoic acid could be especially helpful for people who cannot take statins or who need additional support to bring their cholesterol levels down. This gives doctors more flexibility in choosing the best treatment for each patient.

This discovery is significant because it shows that different types of medications can still achieve similar results when it comes to protecting heart health. In many cases, drugs that treat one condition do not always provide benefits in other areas.

For example, some medications that lower blood sugar in people with diabetes do not always reduce the risk of heart disease. In contrast, both statins and bempedoic acid appear to reduce heart risk by lowering LDL cholesterol.

In simple terms, this new medication offers hope for people who have struggled with existing treatments. It provides another way to manage high cholesterol and reduce the risk of serious health problems.

As research continues, doctors will better understand how to use this medication alongside other treatments. For now, the findings suggest that bempedoic acid could play an important role in improving heart health for many people around the world.
