Quitting smoking is one of the most important steps a person can take to improve their health, but it is also one of the hardest. Many smokers try several times before they succeed.

Over the years, different tools have been developed to help people quit, including nicotine patches, gum, counseling, and medications. Now, a new large review of global research suggests that nicotine e-cigarettes may be one of the most effective options available.

This new analysis brings together results from fourteen major research reviews published between 2014 and 2023. The findings were carefully examined to understand which methods help people stop smoking most successfully. By combining many studies, researchers were able to provide a clearer and more reliable picture of what works.

The strongest evidence shows that e-cigarettes containing nicotine help more people quit smoking compared to other common methods. These include traditional nicotine replacement products like patches, gum, and lozenges. They also outperform non-nicotine e-cigarettes and some behavioral support programs.

Nicotine e-cigarettes work by delivering nicotine in a vapor form without burning tobacco. This means users avoid many of the harmful chemicals produced by smoking cigarettes. At the same time, they still receive nicotine, which helps reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. This combination may explain why they are more effective for some people.

The researchers found that high-quality studies produced consistent results. These studies showed clearly that nicotine e-cigarettes increased the chances of quitting smoking. In contrast, lower-quality studies gave mixed or unclear results. This highlights the importance of relying on strong scientific evidence when making health decisions.

As part of the project, researchers also created a tool called an Evidence and Gap Map. This tool shows where evidence is strong and where more research is needed. It revealed that there is still limited information comparing e-cigarettes with certain medications used to help people quit smoking, such as varenicline or bupropion.

Another important issue is safety. While e-cigarettes are generally considered less harmful than traditional cigarettes, the evidence about long-term risks is still incomplete. Researchers noted that data on serious side effects remains uncertain and needs further study.

The study also found that most of the research has been conducted in high-income countries. This means we do not yet fully understand how effective or safe e-cigarettes are in different populations around the world.

In reviewing these findings, the study provides strong support for the use of nicotine e-cigarettes as a tool for quitting smoking. The consistency of results across many high-quality studies adds confidence to the conclusions.

However, it is important to balance effectiveness with safety. While e-cigarettes may help people quit smoking, they are not risk-free, and more research is needed to understand their long-term effects.

Overall, this research suggests that nicotine e-cigarettes could play an important role in helping smokers quit, especially when other methods have not worked. Future studies should continue to explore safety, compare different treatments, and include a wider range of populations.
