This healthier salt could help lower blood pressure

Salt is a big part of everyday food. Many popular meals contain a large amount of it, even when people do not notice. Foods like pizza, chips, burgers, processed meats, canned soups, and even bread often contain high levels of salt. Because of this, many people consume far more salt than they realize.

Health experts say that most adults should limit their salt intake to about 2,300 milligrams per day. However, studies show that the average American consumes more than 3,400 milligrams daily. Over time, this extra salt can have serious effects on the body.

Salt contains sodium, a mineral that plays an important role in nerve and muscle function. But too much sodium can cause the body to hold onto extra water. This increases the pressure inside blood vessels. When blood pressure stays high for a long time, it is called hypertension, or high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is dangerous because it usually has no clear symptoms. Many people feel normal even when their blood pressure is elevated. In 2015, researchers supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute developed a new type of salt mixture. Instead of being made entirely of sodium chloride, which is regular table salt, the new product contains 75 percent sodium chloride and 25 percent potassium chloride.

This combination keeps much of the familiar salty taste that people enjoy. At the same time, it reduces the amount of sodium people consume. The added potassium is also important for health. The research focused on Tumbes, a coastal region in northern Peru. Many communities there have high rates of high blood pressure and limited access to regular medical care. This made it a good place to test whether a simple change in diet could improve heart health.

Between 2014 and 2017, the researchers worked with six villages in the region. The study involved 2,376 participants ranging in age from 18 to over 65 years old. Some villages replaced regular salt with the new salt mixture in their daily cooking and food preparation. Other villages continued using traditional salt.

The goal of the study was to see whether switching to the new salt could lower blood pressure and reduce the number of people developing hypertension.

After several years of observation, the results were encouraging. People who used the new salt substitute had lower average blood pressure than those who continued using regular salt. In addition, there were fewer new cases of high blood pressure in the communities using the salt mixture.

Even small reductions in blood pressure can make a meaningful difference. Experts say that lowering systolic blood pressure by just two millimeters of mercury can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes across a population.

The researchers also looked carefully for possible side effects. They found no major health problems linked to the use of the salt substitute during the study. This suggests the mixture may be safe for most people.

However, doctors warn that some individuals should be cautious. People with kidney disease may have difficulty processing large amounts of potassium. Because the salt mixture contains potassium chloride, those patients should consult a doctor before using it regularly.

Although this salt substitute is not a complete solution to high blood pressure, it may offer a practical and affordable way to reduce sodium intake. Small changes in daily habits can have large effects when practiced by many people.

Health experts still recommend combining such changes with other healthy habits. Eating more fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and reducing processed foods can all help control blood pressure. Many doctors also recommend the DASH diet, which focuses on whole foods that naturally contain less sodium and more potassium.

The results of this study suggest that replacing part of the sodium in salt with potassium could be a simple but powerful public health strategy. By making small adjustments to the ingredients people use every day, it may be possible to reduce blood pressure and protect heart health across entire communities.
