Your kidneys are small organs, but they do very big jobs inside the body. Each day they filter waste from your blood, remove extra water through urine, and help control blood pressure.
They also keep important minerals such as sodium, potassium, and calcium in balance. In addition, the kidneys help keep bones strong by managing vitamin and mineral levels.
Because the kidneys work around the clock, they are strongly affected by what we eat and drink. Some beverages can support kidney health and help them work better.
Other drinks may put stress on the kidneys and increase the risk of kidney disease over time. Scientists have been studying how different drinks affect kidney function, and their findings show that simple choices can make a big difference.
The most important drink for kidney health is plain water. Water helps the kidneys remove toxins and waste from the bloodstream. It also helps the urinary system work smoothly. When people do not drink enough water, the body can become dehydrated. Dehydration makes it harder for the kidneys to filter the blood properly.
When the body lacks enough water, minerals in the urine may start to form crystals. These crystals can grow into kidney stones, which can cause severe pain and require medical treatment. Drinking enough water helps dilute these minerals so that stones are less likely to form.
Research supports the importance of staying well hydrated. A study published in the medical journal Nephrology found that people who drink more fluids have a lower risk of developing chronic kidney disease.
Chronic kidney disease is a long-term condition in which the kidneys gradually lose their ability to function normally. For most adults, doctors recommend drinking about eight glasses of water each day, although the exact amount may vary depending on climate, physical activity, and individual health.
Another drink that may support kidney health is cranberry juice. Cranberries have long been known for their ability to help prevent urinary tract infections, also called UTIs. These infections occur when bacteria enter the urinary system. If a UTI spreads to the kidneys, it can cause serious damage.
Cranberry juice contains natural compounds that make it harder for bacteria to attach to the walls of the urinary tract. This may reduce the chance of infection. A scientific review published in the journal Advances in Nutrition found that cranberry products can help lower the risk of repeated urinary tract infections, especially in women who often experience them.
However, cranberry juice is not perfect for everyone. Cranberries contain substances called oxalates. In some people, oxalates can increase the risk of certain types of kidney stones. Because of this, people who have had oxalate kidney stones should talk to their doctor before drinking cranberry juice regularly.
Another helpful drink is lemon water. Lemons contain a natural substance called citrate. Citrate can help stop kidney stones from forming by preventing calcium from building up in the kidneys. When citrate levels in urine are higher, it becomes harder for stone-forming crystals to grow.
Adding fresh lemon slices or lemon juice to water is an easy way to increase citrate intake. A small clinical study published in the Journal of Urology reported that people who drank lemonade every day experienced fewer recurring kidney stones compared with those who did not.
Herbal teas are also popular drinks that may provide benefits for kidney health. For centuries, traditional medicine has used plants such as dandelion, nettle, and ginger to support the body’s natural detox processes. Some herbal teas have mild diuretic effects, meaning they may increase urine production and help the body remove waste.
For example, dandelion tea has been studied for its gentle diuretic properties. Increasing urine flow can sometimes help the kidneys flush out extra fluids and waste products. Ginger tea may also help reduce inflammation in the body.
Even so, herbal drinks should be consumed carefully. Not all herbs are safe for the kidneys, and some may interact with medications. Drinking large amounts of certain herbal teas could actually cause harm. Because of this, doctors often recommend speaking with a healthcare professional before using herbal drinks regularly.
Milk and plant-based milk alternatives can also be part of a healthy diet for people with normal kidney function. Dairy milk contains protein and calcium, which are important nutrients for bone health. Plant-based drinks such as almond milk or oat milk are also widely used.
However, these drinks contain minerals such as phosphorus and potassium. Healthy kidneys can easily manage these minerals.
But in people with kidney disease, phosphorus and potassium can build up in the blood and cause health problems. For this reason, people with kidney disease are often advised to choose low-phosphorus or low-potassium milk options with guidance from a dietitian.
While some drinks can support kidney health, others can increase the risk of kidney problems if consumed frequently. Sugary beverages are one of the biggest concerns. Drinks such as fruit punch, sweetened iced tea, energy drinks, and many soft drinks contain large amounts of sugar.
High sugar intake is strongly linked with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of kidney disease worldwide. Over time, high blood sugar can damage the tiny blood vessels inside the kidneys that are responsible for filtering waste.
Dark-colored sodas may also be harmful for another reason. Many of these drinks contain phosphoric acid, which is added to improve flavor and shelf life. Too much phosphorus in the body can place additional strain on the kidneys.
A study published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found that people who drank larger amounts of sugary beverages had a higher chance of developing kidney disease compared with those who rarely drank them.
Overall, the best way to support kidney health is through simple daily habits. Drinking enough water helps the kidneys flush out waste and stay healthy. Lemon water, moderate amounts of cranberry juice, and some herbal teas may also offer benefits when consumed carefully.
At the same time, limiting sugary drinks and heavily processed beverages can help protect the kidneys from long-term damage. By making thoughtful choices about what you drink each day, you can help these hardworking organs continue doing their important job of keeping your body clean and balanced for many years.
