People with type 2 diabetes who also have kidney disease are at high risk for serious health problems. These include kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, and even death. But now, there is some hopeful news from a new study done by Stanford University.
The researchers found that a drug called canagliflozin can lower the risk of kidney failure by about one-third for people who have both type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. This is a big step forward in helping people stay healthier for longer.
The study looked at 4,401 people from 34 countries. Everyone in the study was already receiving the best known treatment for kidney disease, which is called RAAS therapy. Half of the people in the study also took canagliflozin, while the other half took a placebo—a pill with no medicine in it.
The results were very encouraging. People who took canagliflozin were 30% less likely to have kidney failure or die from kidney or heart problems. The chance of kidney failure or death from kidney failure alone went down by 34%. The chance of ending up in the hospital for heart failure or dying from heart issues dropped by 31%.
So, how does canagliflozin work? This drug helps lower blood sugar by making the body get rid of extra sugar in the urine. It is already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat type 2 diabetes and to lower the risk of serious heart problems in people with diabetes who already have heart disease.
This new research shows that the drug also protects the kidneys. That’s important because the main treatment for kidney disease in people with diabetes hasn’t changed much in nearly 20 years.
This means canagliflozin could become an important new option for people with both diabetes and kidney disease. It could help many people avoid kidney failure, stay out of the hospital, and live longer, healthier lives.
If you or someone you know has type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, it’s worth talking to a doctor about this drug. It might be a good choice to help protect both the kidneys and the heart.
