What your face may reveal about fatty liver disease

Fatty liver disease is becoming more common around the world, especially as more people gain weight and live inactive lifestyles.

This condition happens when fat builds up inside the liver. At first, there might be no symptoms, but your face could show small signs that something is wrong with your liver.

There are two main types of fatty liver disease. One is alcohol-related fatty liver disease (AFLD), which happens when a person drinks too much alcohol. The other is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is usually caused by unhealthy eating habits, being overweight, and not getting enough exercise.

If left untreated, both types can damage the liver badly. Over time, the liver may become scarred (fibrosis), stop working well (cirrhosis), or even develop liver cancer.

While only a doctor can diagnose liver disease, your face might offer some early clues. Paying attention to these signs, especially if they come with other symptoms, might help catch liver problems early.

One sign is yellowing of the skin or eyes, a condition called jaundice. This happens when the liver cannot remove a substance called bilirubin, which builds up and causes the yellow color. Jaundice is a clear signal that your liver needs medical attention.

Another possible clue is the appearance of small red veins on your face, known as spider angiomas. These look like tiny spider webs under the skin. They can be caused by hormone changes due to liver problems. While healthy people can also get them—especially pregnant women—having a lot of them may point to liver trouble.

You might also notice puffiness or swelling around your eyes. This can be a sign that your body is holding onto fluid, which may happen when the liver isn’t working well. However, puffiness can also come from poor sleep or allergies, so it’s not a sure sign by itself.

Changes in skin color, like lighter or darker patches, can sometimes be linked to liver disease as well. These color changes may be caused by shifts in hormone or enzyme levels due to liver issues. While not unique to liver problems, they may help when combined with other signs.

These facial changes should not be used to make a diagnosis, but they can serve as warnings. People with fatty liver disease may also feel very tired, have pain in the stomach area, or lose weight without trying.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to talk to a doctor. The earlier fatty liver disease is found, the better the chance of stopping it from getting worse.

The good news is that fatty liver disease can often be reversed. Eating healthier, losing weight if needed, and being more active can make a big difference. These lifestyle changes can help your liver heal and prevent more serious health problems in the future.
