The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an important warning about a growing list of pots and pans that may release dangerous amounts of lead into food.
These cookware items, which are not made in the United States, should be removed from homes immediately, according to the agency.
In a recent safety alert, the FDA said 19 cookware products have been identified as unsafe. Most of them come from India and are made from materials such as aluminum, aluminum alloys, or brass.
After further testing, the FDA added nine more items to the original list it began warning about in August. The agency is now urging people not to use, donate, or try to fix any of these cookware items. “Do not donate or refurbish this cookware,” the FDA stated clearly.
Lead is a toxic metal that can cause serious health problems. Experts agree there is no safe level of lead exposure. Even a small amount can stay in the body and cause damage over time.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), lead poisoning can lead to symptoms such as stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, memory issues, and numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.
Children are especially vulnerable to lead. It can harm their developing brains and nervous systems, causing learning and behavioral problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also at greater risk because lead can affect both the mother and the baby.
If someone thinks they may have used any of these items or been exposed to lead, they should talk to a doctor for further advice and possible testing.
The harmful cookware was discovered in stores located in California, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Washington, D.C. The FDA has not confirmed if these products were sold in other states, and more items may be added to the warning list as investigations continue.
Below is the list of the 19 cookware items the FDA says should be thrown away:
