A common medicine used to treat high blood pressure is being removed from shelves after tests showed that some batches might be contaminated with another drug.
Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has announced a recall of several lots of bisoprolol fumarate and hydrochlorothiazide tablets, sold under the brand name Ziac. This recall was shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The issue is that some of the blood pressure tablets may contain tiny amounts of another medicine called ezetimibe. Ezetimibe is usually used to lower cholesterol, and Glenmark also makes this drug at the same factory.
The batches affected by this recall include bottles with 30, 100, and 500 tablets. All of the recalled tablets came from the same batch number—17232401—with expiration dates in 2025 or 2026. These batches were tested at a manufacturing site in Madhya Pradesh, India, and showed signs of being contaminated.
Even though this issue was found, health officials have labeled the recall as Class III. This means the contamination is not likely to cause serious harm. Still, people who think they might be taking tablets from these batches should look at the package label and talk to their pharmacist or doctor to be sure.
The recalled medicine is a mix of two drugs: bisoprolol fumarate and hydrochlorothiazide. This combination is often used to treat high blood pressure. It works by helping the heart beat more regularly and by removing extra water and salt from the body. Keeping blood pressure under control is important to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
So far, neither Glenmark nor the FDA has given specific instructions for patients. But it’s a good idea for anyone who may have the recalled medication to talk to their doctor. If your medicine is affected, your doctor will tell you what to do next and how to get rid of the recalled tablets safely.
Even though this recall may sound concerning, experts say the health risk is low. Still, it’s important to stay alert and check your medicine if you use this brand.
