People with type 2 diabetes often face many health problems, especially when their kidneys are also affected.
These individuals are more likely to suffer from kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, and even early death. But now, a new study from Stanford University brings hope.
Researchers have found that a drug called canagliflozin can lower the risk of kidney failure by about one-third in people who have both type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. This is a major step forward in treating these serious health issues.
The study included 4,401 people from 34 countries. Everyone in the study received the best treatment available for kidney problems, known as RAAS therapy. Half of the group was also given canagliflozin, while the other half received a fake pill (called a placebo) for comparison.
The results showed that canagliflozin provided strong protection. People who took the drug were 30% less likely to develop kidney failure or die from kidney or heart disease than those who took the placebo.
The risk of kidney failure or death from kidney failure dropped by 34% for those on the drug. There was also a 31% lower risk of going to the hospital for heart failure or dying from heart-related problems.
Canagliflozin works by helping the kidneys get rid of extra sugar through urine. This helps lower blood sugar levels.
The drug is already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It’s also approved for reducing the chance of serious heart problems in those who already have heart disease.
This study is important because for the past 20 years, there has been only one main treatment to protect the kidneys of people with type 2 diabetes. Now, canagliflozin offers a second option that is even more effective.
This new research offers real hope for patients living with diabetes and kidney disease. With canagliflozin, doctors may now have a better way to help protect their patients’ kidneys and hearts, giving them a better chance at a longer and healthier life.
