When people think about liver problems, they often imagine something related to drinking too much alcohol.
But liver cirrhosis is a condition that can happen to many people, including women, for many different reasons.
It means that healthy liver tissue is slowly replaced by scar tissue. This scar tissue stops the liver from working properly, which can cause many health problems.
The liver is a very important organ. It helps clean the blood, digest food, and store energy. But when it gets damaged over a long time, it may start to fail. This damage can come from drinking alcohol too often, getting hepatitis viruses, or having a fatty liver caused by poor diet or obesity.
One of the biggest problems with liver cirrhosis is that it doesn’t always show signs in the beginning. Many people don’t feel anything until the liver is already very damaged. That’s why it’s important to know what to look for, especially in women, who may show some different or more obvious signs than men.
The first thing many women with cirrhosis notice is that they are always tired. Even after resting or sleeping well, they may feel exhausted. This tiredness is often blamed on stress or busy life, so it’s easy to miss as a warning sign.
Another clear symptom is yellowing of the skin or eyes, called jaundice. This happens when the liver cannot clean a substance called bilirubin from the blood. Seeing yellow skin or eyes should be taken seriously and checked by a doctor.
Cirrhosis can also cause changes in women’s periods. Their menstrual cycle may become irregular or stop altogether. This is because the liver helps balance hormones in the body. If the liver is sick, the hormone levels can change, affecting the monthly period. Women who are not in menopause should pay attention to these changes.
Swelling in the belly is another sign of liver cirrhosis. This happens because the liver cannot make enough of a protein that keeps fluid in the right places in the body. As a result, fluid builds up in the stomach area. Sometimes the legs and ankles may swell too. This can feel very uncomfortable.
Problems with digestion are also common. Women may feel like they don’t want to eat, feel sick to their stomach, or lose weight without trying. These symptoms can make the body weaker over time.
Another warning sign is easy bruising and bleeding. A damaged liver cannot make enough proteins that help the blood clot. Women might notice they get bruises from small bumps or that cuts take a long time to stop bleeding.
As the liver becomes worse, harmful substances that the liver normally removes from the blood can build up. This can affect the brain. Women may feel confused, forget things, or have sudden mood changes. These brain-related signs can be hard to notice at first but are very serious.
Doctors say that finding cirrhosis early can help a lot. With the right treatment and lifestyle changes, it may be possible to slow down or even reverse some of the damage. A study in the World Journal of Gastroenterology showed that people who get diagnosed early usually have a better quality of life.
In short, liver cirrhosis is dangerous but not hopeless. Women should know the signs such as extreme tiredness, yellow skin, changes in periods, and stomach swelling. If these symptoms appear, it’s important to talk to a doctor. The sooner the problem is found, the better the chances of living a healthy life.
