Drinking coffee this way may prevent heart attack, stroke

If you love coffee, here’s some great news. A large study from Semmelweis University has found that drinking up to three cups of coffee each day might help protect your heart.

People who drink coffee regularly may have a lower chance of having a stroke or dying from heart disease. This new research adds more support to the idea that coffee can be part of a healthy lifestyle.

Coffee is one of the most common drinks in the world. Many people enjoy it every day, but for a long time, scientists were unsure if it was good or bad for heart health in the long run. Some past studies gave mixed results. This study wanted to take a closer look at the long-term effects of daily coffee drinking.

To do that, researchers used data from a large health database in the UK called the UK Biobank. This database has health information from hundreds of thousands of people.

The study included 468,629 adults who had no signs of heart disease when the study began. Most were around 56 years old, and there were slightly more women than men. These people were followed for about 10 to 15 years.

Researchers divided the participants into three groups based on how much coffee they drank. About 22% rarely drank coffee. The largest group, about 58%, drank between half a cup and three cups per day. The remaining 19% drank more than three cups each day.

What the researchers found was quite interesting. People who drank a moderate amount of coffee (between half a cup and three cups a day) had a 12% lower risk of dying from any cause. They also had a 17% lower risk of dying from heart disease and a 21% lower risk of having a stroke, compared to those who rarely drank coffee.

This suggests that drinking a few cups of coffee each day could help people live longer and keep their hearts healthier. But that’s not all.

The researchers also studied images of the heart from a special scan called a cardiac MRI. These scans show the structure and function of the heart in great detail. The researchers looked at heart images from more than 30,000 people in the study.

They found that people who regularly drank coffee tended to have healthier hearts. Their hearts worked better and were in better shape compared to those who didn’t drink coffee. This might mean that coffee helps slow down how fast the heart ages.

It’s still not completely clear why coffee helps the heart. One reason might be the natural chemicals in coffee that affect the body in positive ways. These compounds might help improve how the heart works and keep it strong over time.

Even though the findings are promising, the researchers, including Dr. Judit Simon, said that more studies are needed. They want to understand exactly how coffee helps the heart and if the same effects happen in all groups of people.

This study was shared at the ESC Congress 2021, a major international meeting about heart health. The size and length of the study make the results important for many people.

So, if you enjoy drinking coffee, this study shows it could be good for your heart – especially if you stick to two or three cups a day. But remember, everyone is different. People with certain health conditions should talk to their doctor before making any changes to their diet.

This research reminds us that simple daily habits, like enjoying a morning cup of coffee, may have a bigger impact on our long-term health than we think.
