Daily marijuana use may increase risk of heart failure

A new study involving more than 150,000 adults in the United States shows that using marijuana every day may raise the risk of developing heart failure.

The study is part of a large research program called “All of Us,” which is looking at how different health habits affect people over time.

This research was led by Dr. Yakubu Bene-Alhasan from MedStar Health in Baltimore. The study followed 156,999 adults who did not have heart failure at the beginning. Each person completed a survey about their marijuana use and was monitored for almost four years.

The results showed that people who used marijuana every day had a 34% higher chance of developing heart failure compared to people who didn’t use marijuana at all. This increased risk was the same no matter how old the person was, whether they were male or female, or whether they had smoked tobacco before.

Previous studies had already shown that marijuana might be linked to heart problems, such as blocked arteries, irregular heartbeat, and heart failure. This new study adds even more proof that using marijuana regularly may not be safe for the heart.

One interesting part of the study looked at whether marijuana could cause heart failure by first damaging the arteries in the heart. When researchers took heart artery disease into account, the risk of heart failure in marijuana users became a little lower but still remained high. This means heart disease could be one reason why marijuana leads to heart problems.

Dr. Bene-Alhasan says we still need more research to fully understand how marijuana affects the heart, especially now that marijuana use is becoming more common in many places. The findings from this study could help shape future health policies and help doctors give better advice to their patients.

The study included both recreational and medical marijuana use. It focused especially on people who used more than the prescribed amount for medical use. Most of the participants were middle-aged and from different racial backgrounds.

However, the study did not look at how people used marijuana—whether they smoked it, ate it, or used it in other ways. This detail might be important in future studies.

Overall, the study shows that using marijuana every day may not be as harmless as some people think, especially when it comes to heart health. If you use marijuana regularly, it might be worth talking to your doctor about possible risks.
