How low should your blood pressure be after 60?

High blood pressure is a common issue for many older adults. But there’s often confusion about what the ideal blood pressure level should be. A new study took a closer look at this and gives us some helpful ideas about what might be best.

Instead of running their own experiments, the scientists reviewed six earlier studies. This type of research is like detective work—they searched through different pieces of evidence to find useful clues.

The focus was on a part of blood pressure called systolic blood pressure, or SBP. This is the first number you see in a blood pressure reading. It shows how much pressure is in your arteries when your heart beats.

In this study, SBP was grouped into three levels: below 130 mmHg, between 130 and 139 mmHg, and 140 mmHg or higher. The results showed that people over 60 who kept their SBP under 130 had fewer serious heart problems.

On the other hand, those with readings of 140 or more were more likely to face heart-related issues. This suggests that aiming for a lower blood pressure might be helpful.

Still, the researchers couldn’t say for sure if these patterns were true for everyone. In some cases, it wasn’t clear if the results were due to the blood pressure treatment or other factors. So, while the findings are promising, they aren’t final.

What does this mean for older people? If you or someone you care about is over 60 and has high blood pressure, it might be a good goal to keep SBP below 130 mmHg. But everyone is different. It’s important to talk to your doctor before changing any treatment plan. They can give advice that fits your personal health needs.

This study adds to ongoing research about blood pressure. Some other studies have even explored how foods like potatoes or diets rich in potassium can affect blood pressure. The more we learn, the better choices we can make to stay healthy as we age.
