High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common health problem.
It happens when the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries is too strong. Many people manage it by eating healthy, being active, and taking medicine.
But for some people, their blood pressure stays high even after taking several kinds of medication. This is called resistant hypertension.
Resistant hypertension means your body is not responding well to current treatments. It might mean that something else is affecting your blood pressure, or that your medications are not working as well as they should. There are many possible reasons for this.
First, doctors need to make sure the diagnosis is correct. Sometimes, people have high blood pressure only when they visit the doctor because they feel nervous. This is called “white coat hypertension.”
Also, if the blood pressure is measured the wrong way or if someone forgets to take their pills regularly, it can look like their blood pressure is not under control when it actually could be.
Once real resistant hypertension is confirmed, doctors check for other reasons. One common cause is eating too much salt. Even a small cut in salt intake can lower blood pressure. Exercise is also important. Being active helps your heart stay strong and your blood vessels stay healthy.
Other health problems can make blood pressure worse. Conditions like being overweight, having kidney disease, or sleep apnea can all play a role. If these problems are treated, blood pressure can improve.
For example, people with sleep apnea who use a special breathing machine at night (called a CPAP machine) often see their blood pressure go down.
Medicine is a big part of treatment too. Sometimes, the mix of drugs needs to be changed. A type of medicine called a diuretic, or “water pill,” helps the body get rid of extra salt and water. One drug in this group, called spironolactone, has been shown to work well in many people with resistant hypertension.
If nothing else helps, doctors may suggest a newer treatment. One of these is called renal denervation. It is a simple procedure where doctors use radio waves to calm down the nerves around the kidneys.
These nerves play a role in blood pressure. Some studies have shown that this treatment can help lower blood pressure in people who have not had success with other methods.
It is very important to treat resistant hypertension. If left untreated, it can lead to heart disease or stroke, which are serious and can be life-threatening. That’s why it’s important to work closely with a doctor to figure out what’s going on and find the best way to manage it.
In short, if your blood pressure stays high even with medicine, don’t give up. There are many options available. With the right care, including changes in daily habits, the right medicine, and possibly new treatments, you can still take control of your health and enjoy a better life.
