Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a serious health condition that can lead to life-threatening problems if not managed properly.
While many people focus on what medication to take, new research suggests that when you take it can also make a big difference.
A major study led by the University of Vigo, in collaboration with other research institutes, looked at the timing of blood pressure medication.
Over six years, more than 19,000 participants had their blood pressure monitored every two days. The researchers discovered that people who took their medication at bedtime enjoyed far greater health benefits than those who took it in the morning.
The benefits for bedtime medication takers were striking:
– 45% lower risk of heart attacks, strokes, or heart failure.
– 66% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular causes.
– 44% lower risk of heart attacks.
– 40% lower chance of needing coronary revascularization.
– 42% lower risk of heart failure.
– 49% lower risk of stroke.
These findings challenge current medical practices, which often don’t consider the best time to take hypertension medication. The study suggests that taking it at night could improve blood pressure control and reduce serious health risks.
However, experts stress that patients should not change their medication schedules without speaking to their doctor. A healthcare professional can provide advice tailored to each person’s needs and medical history.
Managing hypertension is not only about medication. Lifestyle changes are equally important—eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, managing stress, and following medical advice can all help keep blood pressure in check.
This research adds an important new layer to hypertension treatment, showing that timing may be just as important as the medicine itself. More studies are expected to confirm and expand on these results.
As a bonus, some natural remedies like beetroot juice are being studied for their potential in lowering blood pressure. While they should not replace prescribed treatments, they may be a useful addition for some people.
