Fatty liver disease is becoming more common as more people struggle with obesity and lead inactive lifestyles. This condition happens when fat builds up in the liver.
It often doesn’t show any clear symptoms at first, but some subtle signs on your face might give clues that your liver isn’t working properly.
There are two main types of fatty liver disease. One is called alcohol-related fatty liver disease (AFLD), which is caused by drinking too much alcohol. The other is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is more common and usually happens due to poor diet, lack of exercise, and being overweight.
If not treated, both types can damage the liver and lead to serious health problems, including scarring of the liver (fibrosis), severe damage (cirrhosis), and even liver cancer.
While changes in the face alone can’t confirm liver disease, they can be early warning signs. It’s important to pay attention to these signs, especially if you also have other symptoms. Here are some facial changes that might be linked to liver problems:
One common sign is yellowing of the skin and eyes, a condition called jaundice. This happens when the liver can’t get rid of a substance called bilirubin, which is made when red blood cells break down.
When bilirubin builds up in the body, it causes the whites of the eyes and skin to look yellow. Jaundice is a strong signal that something might be wrong with your liver.
Another possible sign is the appearance of small, spider-like veins on the face. These are called spider angiomas. They happen when tiny blood vessels near the skin’s surface expand. This can be caused by changes in hormone levels due to liver problems. While a few of these veins can be normal, having a lot of them could be a reason to talk to your doctor.
Some people may also notice swelling or puffiness around the eyes. This could be due to fluid buildup in the body, which can happen if the liver isn’t working well. Although puffy eyes can also be caused by other things like allergies or lack of sleep, it’s worth paying attention to if you have other signs of liver trouble.
Changes in skin color, such as lighter or darker patches, might also be a sign. These changes may happen because the liver isn’t properly handling certain hormones or chemicals. This symptom by itself doesn’t mean you have liver disease, but it could be a part of the bigger picture.
While these signs don’t prove you have fatty liver disease, they could help catch problems early. People with fatty liver disease might also feel very tired, have pain in the upper right part of the belly, or lose weight without trying.
If you notice these symptoms, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor. Catching fatty liver disease early makes it easier to treat and prevent more serious damage.
The good news is that fatty liver disease can often be managed or even reversed with healthy lifestyle choices. Eating nutritious foods, staying active, and keeping a healthy weight are some of the best ways to take care of your liver.
By watching for early signs and making smart choices, you can protect your liver and stay healthier in the long run.
